Layers of Color of the High Desert -- Grace Bishko

Gbpinemountain72550433 A couple of months ago, while driving around the Millican Valley, I began to truly realize what the “high desert” is – huge areas of extremely flat land that are covered with the driest, most brittle looking, and colorful vegetation I’ve ever seen.  From a distance, though, everything looked soft, and layered with beautiful arrays of muted greens and other hues like pinks and yellows.  Then, there were the mountains, complacently anchored in the farthest distance from view - mountains with names like Bear Creek Mountain, and Pine Mountain.  Who named them?  And when were they named, and why?  I know that this valley and the mountains have history, both known and unknown, but who can tell it to me?  It’s time for some research. However, I decided to paint the mystery into this painting, before I came to know the realities.

What a Difference a Frame Makes -- Find out How High Desert Gallery can make a difference for you!

    ... and now ...

What a Difference a Frame Makes --  Conservation Framing

Picture framing provides an attractive presentation for art and objects, but it serves another important function as well: protection.  Framing can protect against damage from common environmental sources such as light, moisture, insects, and handling.  At High Desert Gallery we take pride in a well designed and aesthetically pleasing custom framing "package" and one that is archival and protect your treasure for many many years.

Nafm07conservationbwimagesmall Archival or Conservation Framing (sometimes called preservation framing) is the practice of framing art and objects using the most protective methods and materials available. It begins with the materials that will touch the art.  This includes the board that rests behind the art, the matboard that touches the front of the art, and the adhesive or other material that holds the artwork in place.  All materials must be acid-free and stable, and the artwork should be able to be removed from the framing without tearing or staining the art.

In Conservation Framing, space is provided between the art and the glass, to allow room for air circulation.  Without this space, changes in temperature and humidity can cause condensation of moisture inside the frame, leading to formation of mold, or even causing the art to stick to the glass (this is especially a problem with glossy photographs.)  The necessary space is often provided by mats or spacers.

The glass used in Conservation Framing can be an important part of the protection of the art, because excessive light can be damaging to many types of artwork.  We offer Conservation and Museum glass that are made especially for framing. They provide protection from UV rays.

At High Desert Gallery we will offer you Conservation Framing materials and techniques whenever you have something of value framed—whether the value is monetary or sentimental. Most people think Conservation Framing is significantly more expensive.  Don't make this assumption as the cost is often not much more than ordinary framing, and the protection provided to your valuable artwork is a worthwhile investment for the future.

Whether you are framing your most recent travel or event poster, family portrait or a fine art original print or painting we can provide options for you and the options will have  preservation in mind!

The October 6 th MIPP concert anticipates the upcoming world premiere of Oswald's longer work, which the Central Oregon Symphony will perform during the Fall Concert Series at Bend High School Auditorium on October 27, 28, and 29, 2007.

The Music in Public Places (MIPP) series brings chamber music to non-traditional venues, offering the public up-close-and-personal opportunities to discover and enjoy classical music. The October 6 th concert, hosted by the High Desert Gallery of Redmond, at 453 SW 6th Street and Local Grounds, is the first of four anticipated MIPP events to be held this season. What a Difference a Frame Makes   - The Art of Frame Design!

Confused by all the frame/moulding samples on the walls at High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing? From fancy gold to funky textures, we have frames available in an incredible selection.  It is fun just to look, but how do you choose the right one for your picture? With more than 20 years in the art and framing business we are thinking we can likely  help with that!

The style and size of the frame is a key part of the framing design.  It should be coordinated with the artwork and any matting or other decorative elements that will be used. The goal is a balanced design that enhances and provides a good presentation for the art, without overwhelming it.  The color, shape, texture and size of the moulding all play a role.  Some people use narrow, contemporary frames on all of their art, while others enjoy the elegance and drama of wide, ornate mouldings, even on small artwork.  The best framing for each piece of art evolves from a combination of personal preference, current fashion, and cultural traditions. If color is critical to your room design, bring along a swatch of fabric or paint so we can coordinate the art to the room.

Whether seeking period authenticity or eclectic flair, or anything in between, there is a lineNafm07weddingframesmall of frame mouldings to suit every style. Today’s mouldings are made from wood, aluminum, and newer materials such as resin.  They may be hand-carved, machine embossed, extruded, or molded.  The finishes range from simple solid colors to elaborate, multi-layered colors and textures.

Stop into our art and framing gallery in downtown historic Redmond Oregon and lets us to show you several different mouldings for your art and pictures.  Notice how different mouldings affect the appearance of the art: some look important, some look formal, others playful.  One may accent a particular color in the art, while another one seems to reflect the overall style of the art.  We framed anything from precious fine art, family treasures, football uniforms to wedding dresses.  We can help and there are many possibilities and looking is always fun and easy!

Sheep Camp Memories -- Kathy Deggendorfer

Kdsheepcampmemories72650301They used to run a lot of sheep up in the mountains in the Sisters and Camp Sherman Oregon area to eat the spring grasses.  I love to look in the old aspen groves for the signatures of the  sheepherders who followed their flocks and had the time to sit in the shade and sign an "autograph" on the white page of the aspen bark.

At a wedding here in Sisters the family had taken framed images of those family members who had passed on or couldn't attend-framed them and hung them in the aspen grove as part of the celebration and sense of family.  It was  a powerful image and called for me to paint...

I thought these old sheepherders and their companions like dogs, sheep and horses would be what I would hang in the mountain aspen groves to honor their memories.

    Kathy Deggendorfer – September 2007

About Kathy Deggendorfer: Kathy lives on a cattle and hay ranch just outside of Sisters, Oregon. Inspired by the color, pattern and texture of her surroundings, she creates vibrant and colorful watercolor paintings. Whimsical images of flowers and ranch life fill the paintings with color and life. "Folks tell me they just feel happy when they look at my work-- that makes me happy."

Raised in Portland, Oregon, in a clothing manufacturing family, she says ,"Sewing skills skipped a generation with me... but I love fabric. I like to call my creations 'Painters Quilts.' I can prowl around the rounders full of prints at the Stitchin' Post with the best of 'em... I just put my fat quarters down with a paintbrush."

Kathy's work is collected throughout the Pacific Northwest. Represented by High Desert Gallery in Bend, Redmond & Sisters, Oregon, she has pieces in the permanent collection at Redmond Airport, she wrote and illustrated a children's book for St. Charles Medical Center, and her work has been translated into clothing and fabric for Columbia Sportswear.

About Danae (Nye) Bennett-Miller: Danae, a featured Oregon Public Broadcasting "OregonDbmbuffalo72300225 Art Beat" artist, uses the medium of lost-wax casting as she conjures life and motion out of once fluid ripples and flows. Like watching lava give birth to land, her pieces create their own virtual space, and ask us to ponder our world through a different pair of eyes. Some public in scale, some intimate, form and substance give way to emotion, movement and animal consciousness. Danae, a long time Central Oregon Artist has several larger bronzes located in public areas of Central Oregon including “Bueno, Homage to the Buckaroo” a larger-than-life sized bronze horse traversing a rock trail. “Bueno,” stands at the Roundabout at Newport Avenue and 14th Streets in downtown Bend, Oregon. Additionally, “Dancing for Flossie,” a pair of cranes is located at the corner of Minnesota where it intersects with Lava Street in historic downtown Bend, Oregon. Danae is represented in Central Oregon by High Desert Gallery with locations in Bend (Fall 2008), Redmond and Sisters, Oregon.
