Back to Aristotle and Beyond -- Paul Alan Bennett

Pabaristotlenights96650359 Aristotle Nights:   When I look up at the night sky I often feel as though I am looking into the past- that this same sky was seen by thousands of generations before me- back to Aristotle and beyond.  The old photographs give that feeling of the past.  They can also be seen as constellations- the Constellation of the Twins: the Constellation of the Artist as a Young Woman- or as twin moons spinning their stories in the night sky.  These story fragments come to me as I work and help to guide me in how I weigh the mood/tone of the piece.  For the viewer, he or she may see something entirely different.  What they may see is just as valid as the thoughts I have shared here.

What A Difference A Frame Makes -- Limited Edition Giclee Prints

Jellsarisiancedog1 In addition to being known as a stellar custom framing gallery, High Desert Gallery has established itself as an "original" gallery.   There is nothing like owning a well framed original and we always try to work with our clients to collect original works by the artist we represent.   The fact is that sometimes it makes sense to purchase prints.   Prints are often sought after, great images, and the prints we represent are of the highest quality.   High quality prints, what we refer to as "fine art prints", are a great way to collect an artists works and complement your original paintings.   High Desert Gallery represents artists that produce original prints such as etchings, monotypes, woodblocks prints as well as fine art prints that are high quality reproductions of the original work.  The evolution of computer technologies has created great benefits for fine art printmaking. A fine art giclée is created from the artist's original artwork. An extremely high resolution digital image of the artwork is made, then loaded into specially enhanced printers which output the digital image onto fine art paper or canvas.

Since the digital image includes nearly every subtlety and nuance of the original - including the smallest details of light and shadow such as the textures of the paint and canvas or paper - the fine art giclée is often difficult to distinguish from the original work of art. Brush strokes have the appearance of brush strokes, even though they are only two dimensional images on paper. Typically, limited edition artwork is hand-signed by the artist indicating their personal approval of each work of art, then individually numbered to identify each work of art as a part of the total edition.  Once the prints in the edition have been sold out, the digital file is then removed by the Giclee printmaker in order to maintain the integrity of the limited edition. The image will not be published again in the same form. Open editions on the other hand may or may not be signed by the artist and for the most part are not numbered as the edition is not limited.

Recently, High Desert Gallery formed a strategic alliance with a distributor of fine art giclee prints representing  many American Artists.  The alliance will allow us to provide an additional line of giclee prints in our Redmond Custom Framing Gallery while still concentrating on representing our Oregon and Central Oregon artists.    The new line is unique and represents a wide range of work, style, color and formats.   Additionally the line also allows for size customization. If you love an image but need it bigger  -- 60” wide for example -- then we can customize it for you.  Don't need it 60” wide then we can order is as small as you need – 10” for example.  This provides options for your décor and home or office.   Our alliance partner, Artaissance, comes with years in the art and framing business and was born from a love of art and a passion for experiencing life to the fullest. Whether you’re choosing one special piece or looking to transform your entire living space, High Desert Gallery and Artaissance will help you create the experience. An experience for your walls that reflects what you love and who you are.

The High Desert Gallery / Artaissance collection spans the art scene, fromChavartisgreenpears_2 traditional landscapes to hip, contemporary abstracts.  The collection is continually updated to keep it fresh and exciting, and the publisher looks for artists who offer a unique voice in the art world. With thousands of images to choose from, we believe you will find several that speak to you.

If you have that special need then we encourage you to take time to browse through our portfolio and create your own special collection. We hope you enjoy the Artaissance experience as much as we enjoy bringing it to you. To view the collection please visit:  Artaissance - Life is one big canvas!  ... RAVE -- Paulina Springs Books to Open in Redmond Oregon

Paulinasprings96650520 Paulina Springs Books, one of the best independent bookstores in Central Oregon – some would says State of Oregon – is opening in historic downtown Redmond Oregon.  For those of you that know downtown Redmond then you will realize that Paulina Springs Books will be located across the street and a bit north of High Desert Gallery.  We have blogged on the development of downtown Redmond and some great new stores like Goody's, Paulina Springs, Tiger Lily and others are committing to the redevelopment of a wonderful downtown.    The Redmond Chamber and The Redmond Downtown Partnership have done a great job of  promoting the attributes of downtown Redmond Oregon.

Here is just a quick excerpt from Brad Smith's "Paulina Springs Cyberpassage." -- A  monthly electronic newsletter. ...

Coming soon-to a town very near here-a second Paulina Springs Books! We're opening a new store at 422 SW 6th St in Redmond between Deschutes and Evergreen streets. The building may be very old but, with the extensive remodel that is currently underway, it will seem brand new. When we open, the building will have a completely new storefront (the old one was falling over), a new floor (including new floor joists), new walls, new ceiling and new roof, and all new electrical and plumbing. It's been a long haul, but we think Redmond will be as proud of it as we are.

We don't know yet exactly when we'll be opening. We planned to open November 15th. Unfortunately, we received word from our fixture supplier that they are running behind schedule. We do not have a delivery schedule at this point as they are trying to figure out if there is anything they can do to get it back on track, or at the very least get it closer to the original delivery date. At this point we are expecting we will still open on November 15th, but instead of opening as Paulina Springs Books, we are going to open as Paulina Springs Book Bizarre. It will be a fun and festive shopping environment, but with a limited product selection until our fixtures arrive.

In spite of this setback, we're excited and looking forward to serving the community of Redmond, much in the same manner we have served the community of Sisters. We know many of our customers come from Redmond, so we hope to see you there soon. We don't know what to expect in Redmond and how the reading tastes will compare to the readers at the Sisters store, so be sure to give us your input. Our plan is to open a store quite similar in book selection to the Sisters store, then evolve with the interests of the folks coming through our doors. Be sure to come check us out if you are in the area
    .”

We welcome Paulina Springs Books to Redmond and look forward to their participation in a wonderful community.    If you want to be added to their email newsletter call the store in Sisters Oregon and they will add you to their newsletter!  Paulina Springs Books – 541-549-0866. Please welcome Paulina Springs Books to Redmond – visit them on opening day, grab a cup of coffee, browse a bit and buy a book or two!

    Cheers!

Steens Mountain Energy -- Kimry Jelen

Kjsagebrushflats72717900 I visited the Steens Mountain range in South East Oregon in search of fall colors and wild horse bands. I was lucky enough to see several herds, but too far away to get any good pictures. The image of the wide open range and the mountains as a backdrop impressed me as we tried different routes. On our last trek around an upper loop, we were lucky enough to come across this small herd. I got some great pictures, it was the perfect family. A couple mamas and babies, a beautiful strong stallion (he's the one looking straight at us), two mares one old, one young. It was a moment charged with so much energy I had to paint them in bold colors.

Hot Dog Vendors Approved For Downtown Sisters Oregon?

Sistersdogs_2 Well not yet but the City of Sisters is gathering information and may consider revising the city code/rules that may or may not approve shaved Hawaiian ice, hot dogs, cotton candy and mountain bike vendors and alike in the public and private right-of-aways of downtown Sisters.  Don't get me started on ice cream cone vendors.

I'm thinking that a hot dog vendor in front of Leavitt's Western Wear is a great idea.  Ketchup and mustard would be a great addition to any merchant's sidewalk.  I can just smell/see it now!  Why not a tattoo vendor in front of Common Threads.  Get your matching sweater and tat at the same time! Its not just food and novelty items  -- Setting up artist/craft vendors without a permanent retail location isn't what Sisters is all about.

The current code allows for "transient merchants" to set up shop on private property but they are required to pay a daily fee of $100 which in all practical purpose makes it financially difficult for a street vendor to set up shop unless there is a large event in town.  Does Sisters really need street vendors every day or for that matter just in the heavy traffic months of summer? If you have an opinion please share it with the Sisters Chamber survey ... Visit:  Hot Dog Vendor Survey .     The Chamber is conducting a survey on behalf of the city to gauge the response from the business community. Survey deadline is October 31 at 5PM.

    Thanks for listening ;-)

... BTW does anyone know if I can find some $5 BluBlockers in Central Oregon?  I missed my chance last Rodeo!

The Raven Woman of The Metolius -- Paul Alan Bennett

Pabravenwomenofthemetolius72650 I've often seen ravens at the exit to the Metolius River off of Hwy. 22 just west of Sisters, Oregon.  They seem to be an ancient part of that landscape.  I know a woman here in Sisters who is tattooed with the image of ravens along her back and left arm.  I took some pictures of her, thinking that I would emphasize the tattoo images and tie that idea together with the Metolius River.  However, as I worked on the painting my idea changed.  Her pose with the raven looked like a statue, so I abandoned the tattoo idea and painted her as if she were made out of bronze.  She looks over a landscape that reminds me of one of  those 19th century images of scenes from the American west where you're not sure what is real and what might be fantasy.

The figure is dramatized by the setting sunset.  Such theatrics lend themselves to this image that feels mythic to me- as if I've discovered an ancient legend, The Raven Woman of The Metolius!
