Lillian writes, "I have continued to use shells, cones, and other natural objects to create textural surfaces on the pieces in my Shadow Spirit Series, again a collaboration with Nature.  The petroglyph and rock paintings of the Columbia River Gorge inspire the form and energy of these works".

Lillian's most recent recognition, The 2007 Earle A. Chiles Award, will be presented on December 4, 2007 at the Benson Hotel in Portland Oregon. The Earle A. Chiles Award, established in 1983, is a cash award given annually by the High Desert Museum.  This years recipient, Lillian Pitt is acknowledged for creating images that sustain ancient Columbia Plateau cultures and beliefs, and promoting harmony within people, communities, and nature.  The award is funded by the Chiles Foundation.

Using traditional images and non traditional art techniques, Lillian Pitt'sLpstickmaskanagama72300 work shares emotion and energy with people who find "spirits keep whistling me home" their own journey.  Lillian's work is now on permanent display and sale at the High Desert Gallery for all to visit.  Gallery Director, Myrna Dow,  says:"We are truly honored to work with Lillian and are pleased that through our representational partnership her work will continue to be showcased in a professional gallery setting here in Central Oregon.”

About Lillian Pitt:  In her book "Spirits Keep Whistling Me Home", Lillian writes, "My early work began as a playful interaction with clay...I felt that I needed to make work that represented my own culture and who I am (knowing) that my people had a 10,000 year history of living in the Columbia River Gorge...I felt privileged to begin making images in clay of the pictographs, petroglyphs, and legendary beings of my ancestral homeland".

Born in 1943 of Warm Spring/Yakima/Wasco heritage, Lillian often features Stick Indians in her masks, sculpture, and jewelry. "Growing up on the Warm Springs Reservation, we were told Stick Indians living in the mountains would whistle to guide a good person to safety if lost in the woods, and would lead a bad person deeper into the forest.  Because my life has been enriched by so many good people, I picture the Stick Indian  I make whistling people to good fortune and well being".  Lillian Pitt is represented in Central Oregon by High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon.

The Oxford Hotel Taking Shape in Downtown Bend Oregon

Hdgoxfordhotelweb If you have recently driven or walked by NW Minnesota and Lava Street in Downtown Bend Oregon  you have likely noticed the new construction of the Oxford Hotel.  Although we haven't released an official press release on our upcoming expansion it is a known fact that High Desert Gallery is expanding.   When the Oxford Hotel opens in the fall of 2008 we will occupy about 1800 square feet of retail storefront on the corner of the building.

We love Minnesota Street, especially the shops and our soon to be neighbors.  If you haven't been down Minnesota Street lately please take the time and explore – Thump is a great coffee establishment that shouldn't be missed.  Kent and his wife do a great job on the coffee side of the house and have some thoughtful art exhibitions normally rotating monthly.  Check them out and drink some Stumptown CoffeeDouglas Fine Jewelry and Design, Staccato at the Fire Hall and more await you during your stroll.  Pegasus Books (Duncan's Blog) , Karen Bandy Design Jewelry and The Book Barn are just across Bond on Minnesota, Kebanu Gallery is around the corner on Bond and down the way at Wall and Minnesota is MockingBird Gallery, another fine art gallery concentrating on Original Art.  Don't forget to walk down the breezeway and visit the nonprofit Mirror Pond Gallery.  You can spend a good portion of your visit on Minnesota Street and capture a good essence of Downtown Bend.  Great shopping and original art can be found at Kebanu, High Desert Gallery, Mockingbird  and Mirror Pond as well as others in downtown.

This week, Jeff McDonald, Business Report for The Bend Bulletin had a nice article with Curt Baney of The Baney Corporation and their expansion to downtown Bend and the building of the Oxford Hotel.  The Hotel Image is a rendering from the Mandala Agency that was published in the Bend Bulletin's article:  Hotelier takes it up a notch

    ~~
From the Bend Bulletin's article with a quote from Curt Baney ...

The rooms of the downtown hotel will range in size from 450 square feet to 850 square feet and will be priced between $150 and $300 per night, he said. It will cater to customers who are seeking a personalized level of service and luxurious accommodations, he said.

High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon, which has locations in Sisters and Redmond, will be located at street level in the hotel and a full-service restaurant also is planned, Baney said.

“The timing is right because of the parking structure, which spring-boarded development of the hotel,” Baney said. “We love the activity in downtown Bend. It’s so vibrant and active.”
    ~~

The new upscale hotel is a great asset to downtown and will really “finish off” Minnesota Street.  We truly look forward to opening in Bend and are very excited with the location, the building and the ambiance of Minnesota Street.  More information will follow and look for a “Heck of a Gallery Opening” come the fall of 2008. Until then please continue to visit High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing in Downtown Sisters and Redmond.  The gallery features Fine Art & Stellar Customer framing where we are -- The Art and Soul of Central Oregon!

About Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart

Stacey Earle and Mark Stuart blend folk, country, blues and old-timey jug band music. Their music mixes whimsy and wisdom, from the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, to the Philadelphia Folk Fest, Kerville, Merle Fest and many more.

Theirs is a musical marriage and they both come from musical families. Stacey's older brother is country rocker Steve Earle. She spent a year and a half on tour with her brother, and then returned to Nashville to start a career of her own. Mark Stuart grew up in Nashville, playing in his father’s honky tonk band while in high school. He also spent time in Steve Earle’s band in the late 90s.

Their songs are the diaries of their life - good times and bad, a commentary on the love they share.   Soundclips at: http://www.staceyearle.com
