Build it and they will come. Unfortunately it won’t happen overnight and it won’t necessarily be painless

HDG-SW6Street-RerouteOpen-96-650 It's open. There are very few big trucks. You can talk on the sidewalks of downtown Redmond Oregon. It is quiet on the streets. Minimal road dust, minimal gas and diesel fumes to clog the throat. There is optimism in the air. The Redmond Highway 97 north and south bypass / reroute is open. Unfortunately there are no shovels digging up 5th or 6th street to improve the look and feel of downtown.

Back in February 2007 the Redmond Spokesman wrote an editorial titled -- “Action, not words downtown.” We posted with a response of “It’s not the sexiest part of the downtown plan.” Our position was very similar and in approval of the Spokesman's position. As we stated in our post “Yes, Redmond Spokesman we also think that the golden shovel needs to hit the dirt on 5th and 6th streets as soon as the first cars head north and south on the new Highway 97 bypass. The bypass will open in about a year and half and it will come sooner than most of us realize. It’s time to start the planning process on the redevelopment of 5th and 6th streets now. – Don’t wait for traffic counts. Get the experts to forecast 10 and 20 years ahead and start the planning and building process now. Built it and they will indeed come.

Fast forward to today and the year and half has come and gone and the bypass is open. The public planning process still marches on and to my knowledge there is no time line for the renewal of downtown Redmond's most important streets – SW 5th and 6th. The urban renewal planning, financing and public input process has been lengthy and is far from over. The downtown merchants will suffer. Some will not survive, others will prosper but most will continue to exist and wait. The City of Redmond has moved the new City Hall and City Park initiative along very nicely and things look promising. While the waiting games happens (another 1-3 years) the streetscape construction will start and the impacts will be felt for another 1-2 years.

The City is doing a great job of moving things along – just not at a speed that most small businesses want or feel is needed. Feelings and wants are not necessarily reality. Build it and they will come. Unfortunately it won’t happen overnight and it won’t necessarily be painless.  The good news is the potential is huge and the Chamber, Redmond Downtown Partnership and merchants are coming together with a new focus on downtown.  Visit Downtown Redmond Oregon Today -- Find out all you've missed.

About Trisha Hassler: Lifetime quilter and award winning Oregon Artist, Trisha has enjoyed numerous group and one woman exhibits in the Pacific Northwest and New Zealand. A former "Art in the Pearl" and L.O.C.A.L. 14 board member, she has been featured in Fiber Arts Magazine, Quilting arts Magazine and lectures about her work across the country. Trisha Hassler embraces both torch-cut steel and improvisational quilting and through her artistic abilities combines the two mediums in one art form challenging the opposite ends of the artistic spectrum. "The mixture of quilted fabrics with torch-cut steel grows from a life-long personal fascination with the paradox," states Trisha. "The art work in a continuing three-dimensional series titled 'Surface Connections' speaks quietly of the intricate center in our most private being surrounded by a strong protective armor and the interplay of the two dissimilar elements is a reminder to embrace the ever shifting balance present in our lives." High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is honored to represent Trisha Hassler exclusively in Central Oregon.

About Paul Alan Bennett: Award winning professional artist, educator, and art advocate, Paul Alan Bennett has garnered national attention. Paul's imagery is passionately detailed and manifests a unique perspective and style resulting in colorful, vivid imagery sought after and collected nationally. Honors graduate of Maryland Institute of Art and Master of Arts from The University of La Verne (Athens Greece), Paul has excelled in the field of watercolor and most recently in the release of a select group of Limited Edition Fine Art Giclee Prints and worked closely with Pendleton Woolen Mills to release limited edition tapestry blankets. Paul's work has been reproduced for two Sisters Folk Festival Posters and the 2008 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show poster. His style and perspective originate from memories, life experiences and travels that sparks many of the themes found in this Sisters artist's work. Paul Alan Bennett's artwork is represented by High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon.

About Libby Lehman: Libby Lehman is one of today’s top art quiltmakers. No one is more surprised by this than she is. “ I have a wonderful family, but they weren’t crafters”, says the native Texan. She learned how to sew in 7th grade Home Economics. Her first exposure to quilts came when her mother, Catherine Anthony, enrolled them in a 2-day basic quilting class in 1971. It was love at first stitch. Starting with traditional patterns and techniques, Libby has embraced modern machine technology to create her own unique style. Her popular book, Threadplay with Libby Lehman, has been updated and reprinted. Nihon Vogue of Japan has named her one of the 88 Leaders in the Quilt World. In 2000 her quilt, Joy Ride, was chosen one of the 100 Best Quilts of the 20th Century. Libby’s stunning quilts are highly prized by international collectors, museums and corporations. Libby happily spends most of her time teaching, judging and quiltmaking. She has taught in all 50 states as well as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, the UK, Germany, Switzerland, Spain and Canada. When she isn’t traveling, she works out of her home studio in Houston, Texas.

About Cary L Weigand: Born and raised sixth generation in Hawaii, Cary graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Masters of Fine Art in Ceramics and relocated to Central Oregon in 2004. Her major interest in figure modeling expands both the use of ceramic techniques as well as explores some relatively neglected areas in content. Her figures evoke a sense of mass in contrast to the loose and flowing slab work of drapery and body appendages. This formal device provides an important ground for the content of her work, aimed at a search for a contemporary spirituality. Working with porcelain, a figurine is worked upward slowly allowing each layer to dry. Then, it is painted with oxides and glazed before firing. For nationally known artist, Cary Weigand, ceramics is a very humanistic and tactile experience. Drawn to Asian philosophies and Shamanism she finds they both focus on awareness of mind, spirit, and environment. The figure represents a vehicle of humanity. Cary's work is an expression of the subconscious and symbolism. She states: "In this way, I seek to look deeper within myself. I look upon each piece as that something which beckons the impenetrable shadows of madness, or the liquid flow of existence, day after day after day, (Or maybe this heart...) a wild beast caged within its chest, dreaming a dream which we've already seen unfolding before us, (time and time again). Cary's original artwork including her fine art porcelain sculpture is available exclusively in Central Oregon at High Desert Gallery.

About Glen Corbett: Glen, an award winning painter, tapestry weaver and print maker makes Central Oregon her home. She has participated in numerous one woman and group shows in the Northwest and beyond including the Oregon Capital, Maude Kerns Art enter, Honolulu Academy of Art, Ithaca Museum and several Fine Art Galleries on the West Coast. Glen's work is found in private and corporate collections worldwide including AJ Heinz, State of Hawaii, Walsh, Walsh, & Foster, Washington Mutual Savings Bank, Black Butte Ranch, Brooks Resources, Fred Meyer Inc. and many more. "Art captures a very present moment, sometimes evocative of the past or predictive of the future – but at best taps a timeless core/chord." High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is honored to represent Glen Corbett exclusively in Central Oregon.

About Ingrid Lustig: A professional artist for 20 years, Ingrid works with acrylic on canvas and paper with a strong devotion to color and form used in a symbolic way. "I like to keep my paintings fresh, so they look like they are still in the process of being created, even when they are finished." Ingrid moved to Bend, Oregon in 2000 from Pendleton, where she was executive director of Crow's Shadow Institute for the Arts, on the Umatilla Indian Reservation. During the '70s, she worked for wildlife conservation groups, including three years as director of a predatory animal center in the California mountains near Reno, Nevada. Her nonprofit group traveled to schools to bring the message that predators like wolves, bears and cougars are an essential link in the ecosystem. Ingrid holds a Bachelors of Fine Arts from Washington State University at Pullman. She has enjoyed success as an artist and painter and exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in the Northwest. In addition to her professional art career, Ingrid is the Education Director for Arts Central, the Central Oregon regional arts council located in Bend, Oregon. High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is honored to exclusively represent Ingrid Lustig in Central Oregon.

Rowdy Barry -- A different side of a bullfighter

RB-June08Reception-1-96-650 Artists as a whole are wonderful people and Rowdy Barry is no exception. He is truly one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. During last evening's artist reception for Rowdy (see previous Post and Nugget News) we enjoyed a very nice turn out of Rodeo folks, local Sisters Oregon art lovers and the most interesting group of his peers. Friends of Rowdy included a good number the Sisters Rodeo Board, including Glen Miller (pictured with Rowdy (right) and his wife and Lady Wrangler Laura Lee Barry on the left), Curt Kalberg, Dr. Bonny Malone among others. Rodeo announcers Curt Robinson, Wayne Brooks and Rodeo Clown, JJ Harrison attended along with many more Rowdy fans.

During the reception his fans saw a different side of Rowdy. Rowdy is one of the most well recognized bullfighters in professional rodeo. He's been selected to keep bull riders safe at the most prestigious rodeos in the United States and Canada. He's also a well-respected cowboy artist, a family man and the owner of Wild R Ranch. Bullfighting isn't a job for the faint of heart or the non-athlete and it isn't often that people associate a rancher and bullfighter with an artist. It's kind of a different side. The exhibition and sale of Rowdy's original paintings and prints followed his traditional western work depicting ranch and rodeo life. The show has an excellent selection of work and worth a visit to the gallery.RB-MoonlightRest-96-650 Recently Rowdy created two figurative drawings titled Moon Light Past (See Image) and Moon Light Basin. The two original pastels on paper are a departure for Rowdy and last evening was the premier. The work was very well received and he received many complements and encouragement to continue to exploring the human figure. The show hangs through June 15th.

Artist, Rancher, and Bullfighter. All a different side of Rowdy but all the same great guy.

About Rowdy Barry: Rowdy Barry began bullfighting when he was 14 years old and became a member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association in 1986. Rowdy is much more than a bullfighter – He's a real cowboy, rancher, rodeo bullfighter and an accomplished painter and sculptor. His artwork is shown across the nation at Western art shows and rodeos and is widely collected. The Kennewick, Washington, rancher was the commissioned artist for national Wrangler Bullfight posters from 1992-1997 and honored this year with the commission for the 2008 Sisters Rodeo Poster. High Desert Gallery in Sisters Oregon will feature Rowdy's paintings and sculpture from June 1 through June 15 with an artist reception on Thursday, June 12 from 5-8pm. For more information on Rowdy visit is website: Rowdy Barry

Bellavia -- The Beautiful Way, Performing at High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing

Bellavia-TheBand-72-300 Back in April we had a wonderful artist reception at High Desert Gallery located in Redmond Oregon and featured the work of Patrick Horsley. The evening was well attended and the visitors to the gallery truly appreciated Patrick's fine pottery and the music by Bellavia. We have two upcoming artist receptions with Kathy Deggendorfer on June 21st in Sisters Oregon and Kimry Jelen on June 27th in Redmond Oregon. Kimry's show is during Walk The Art Beat – We hope you can attend both receptions. Again, Bellavia will provide the music for both receptions and we hope you are able to come, enjoy while we share the art and music of very talented local artists.

We asked Jim from Bellavia to provide a bit of history on the group and what makes them continue to play and inspire us. Read on ....

Bellavia began as three old guys playing the blues, Lou Brochetti, Phil and Jim. At a coffee house open mic one night Kimberly came in with her flute and asked to play. She was shy, stage struck, and afraid to sing out loud ...but boy could she play the flute!!! It didn't take any of us long to realize we had stumbled onto a great treasure. We started adding jazz and standards to our repertoire, and tried to feature Kimberly as much as possible. As Kimberly says...she found her wings. Some members have come and gone, but for the three of us the music and the joy stays on. Bellavia...the beautiful way....is an apt name for what the friendship and the music means to us . Bellavia...the BEAUTIFUL WAY.

I can’t remember when I started singing and playing instruments, it just seems like I always have. I dabbled in piano and guitar as a young child, but when I discovered woodwinds, well, I was hooked. I played bass clarinet in school band and I always have been and always will be a band geek. I picked up the flute several years ago and began to discover the joy of improvisation. Fortunately I have been blessed with good friends willing to give me the chance to find my wings. Music has truly been a joy in the journey of my life. ~~ Kimberly

Music memories begin with the rides home from grandma and grandpa's house in Everett. Me, in the back seat, watching the moon follow us home and hearing Dad sing Mills Brothers songs. “You never miss the water til the well runs dry...” Piano at 7, trombone at 10, guitar at 16, folk music, college and coffee houses, family gatherings...and then years of music with the kids as they learned keyboards, drums and guitar. 25 years with the Dry Canyon Band, good friends all, forever writing songs. Played some fiddle, dobro, lap steel. And now Bellavia. I'm a lucky man. Lucky and blessed....a geezer, over 60, having the time of his life. ~~ Jim

I was born and raised in St Louis , MO growing up surrounded by the sounds of all types of music from jazz and blues to rock, folk and country. I took every opportunity to listen, explore and enjoy the music and the musicians that were available to me. I began playing the guitar in my teen years playing the rock & roll tunes of the 60’s and 70’s. Playing in bands at an early age afforded me the opportunity to interact and learn from many different and accomplished guitarists and musicians. Throughout the years I have continued to study and play honing and refining my knowledge, technical skills and love of playing. Making music and having fun are synonymous to me This rock based, jazz and blues sculpted guitarist finds no greater pleasure than bringing the joy of music to any and all that join in the fun ~~ Phil

Walk The Art Beat - Redmond's Community Art Walk - Friday, June 27 5-8pm

Wtabjune200872650 Save the date – Friday, June 27th from 5-8pm for Redmond's  'Walk the Art Beat,'  a community arts event with the theme of “WestScape.”  Over 20 merchant locations will host artists, live music, refreshments and a boat load of fun.  A Hoot For Sure!  The south bound traffic on “old” Highway 97 (6th street) should be traveling on the NEW bypass and the result will be wonderful, festive and enjoyable evening to stroll around downtown Redmond Oregon.  You might even be able to hold a causal conversation on the sidewalks while hearing champagne corks pop in the gallery.

Speaking of the Gallery --  High Desert Gallery will feature the original paintings by Kimry Jelen.  Kimry has really out done herself and the show is spectacular.  Stop in and visit the gallery, chat with Kimry, enjoy live music by Bellavia, sip on wine or champagne and buy a painting (or two).  The event is free and open to the public – Purchases are encouraged by not required ;-)

Come for the fun, stay for the Art  – Enjoy the Western and Landscape features of WestScape during the June edition of Walk The Art Beat.

High Desert Gallery at the Oxford Hotel - The building Stage

Hdgtoh052008196650 Working on the third story with four more to go!   The Oxford Hotel is taking shape even though it just sheet rock and metal walls.  In a previous post we mentioned that our new location in downtown Bend will be located on the ground floor of the new Oxford Hotel.  For all of you non Central Oregonians or those of you that haven't been downtown Bend recently  the new Oxford Hotel, a Baney Corporation property,  is being built at 10 NW Minnesota Street on the corner of Lava near Bond Street.  The seven story full service boutique hotel will have approximately 56 large suites, many with balconies and overlook downtown.  Convenient parking for the gallery and hotel will be provided in the city parking structure adjacent to the hotel.  High Desert Gallery will occupy nearly 2000 square feet of the retail ground floor and be one of two retail establishments.

Needless to say we are thrilled to be part of downtown Bend and will service our Bend area clients with our great mix of Central Oregon Artists and full service art and framing service.  Expect more information as the building and our Bend fine art gallery progresses.  We have a full boat load of activities planned when we open.  Stay tuned!
