Patricia Freeman-Martin -- Cowgirl with Dun Pony

Guest Artist Patricia Freeman-Martin joins the party at High Desert Gallery's Bounty Show! Previously we announced our Fall "Bounty" event at High Desert Gallery in Sisters Oregon with the fine art exhibition and sale as part of “Celebrate National Art and Framing Month.” The Fall “Bounty” show opens on October 1 and runs through October 31, 2008 with an Open House Reception on October 11 & 12th. Several guest artists have joined in on the fun and have contributed one or more original paintings as part of the group “Bounty” show. We hope you can stop by the gallery in October and especially during Sisters' Fall Harvest Fair on the weekend of October 11th and 12th.

PFM-cowgirlwithdunpony-96-650 Patricia, a Central Oregon artist, has woven together a beautiful and complex life of many different themes; cattle ranching, cutting horses, family, and art. For the Bounty show she created a wonderful original painting titled "Cowgirl with Dun Pony." Please join us in October to view this and many more “Bounty” works of art from special guest and gallery artists including Patricia.

For me, the bounty in my life and my art is the western landscape and my relationship to it.

This painting, “Cowgirl with Dun Pony,” is an example of the kind of ideas that spring forth when an Eastern Oregon, ranch raised cowgirl collides with the world of contemporary art. Through my studies of fine art and photography at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque and further exploration of the art world during a five year stint in Manhattan, I gained a freedom of expression which allows me to narrate my life experiences in a deeply personal manner.

This particular painting expresses my love and excitement for the specific, colorful beauty of my old friend, Dunny Hickory, a horse who was my partner in competition for many years and who currently teaches my 11 year old son the sport of cow cutting. -- Patricia Freeman-Martin, October 2008. -- "Cowgirl with Dun Pony," 24" x 48", acrylic and collage on PlexiGlass, 2008

About Patricia Freeman-Martin: Patricia was raised in a ranching and rodeo family in Eastern Oregon graduating from high school in Pendleton, Oregon. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, magna cum laude, from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She moved to New York City and spent nearly five years in the East Village. During a visit home to Eastern Oregon in 1987, she fell in love with a potato farmer from Southern Idaho and never returned to New York. For 16 years, Patricia and her family lived and worked on their ranch at the foot of the Elkhorn Mountains in North Powder, Oregon. Ranching and cutting horses have been an integral part of her life as well as inspiration for her art. In 2004, Patricia and her family purchased a small ranch/horse facility in Terrebonne, Oregon very near Smith Rock. Patricia has woven together a beautiful and complex life of many different themes; cattle ranching, cutting horses, family, and art. She has created a body of art work which presents western subjects and themes painted in a style which reflects her fresh, honest and whimsical way of viewing the world.

PAB-TheRedWheelBarrow-96-650 A Central Oregon icon and nationally known Oregon artist, Paul Alan Bennett has captured fruits of the labor and the resulting year end gardening tasks in a wonderful watercolor (gouache) on paper, titled “Red Wheelbarrow.” Please join us in October to view this and many more “Bounty” works of art from special guest and gallery artists including Paul

The end of summer brings the abundance of the harvest as well as the time to clean out the garden beds. At the Sisters Community Garden this is a big group effort, taking a variety of garden tools and wheelbarrows going back and forth from the owner's garden spot to the compost piles. As a group effort, it is an enjoyable time. Each wheelbarrow load is a clear way to measure one's efforts. This can be very satisfying. The whole process is a good way to be aware of the cycle of the seasons and to share with others in the community. -- Paul Alan Bennett, October 2008.

A Central Oregon favorite, Kathy Deggendorfer has captured Autumn and ranch life in a wonderful watercolor titled “Mountain, Meadows, and Moo.” Please join us in October to view this and many more “Bounty” works of art from special guest and gallery artists including Kathy.

Thoughts from Kathy Deggendorfer:   Autumn at the ranch is always KD-MountainsMeadowsAndMoo-96-650 beautiful. I love the look of the fields changing from the green of summer to the golds of fall.

This year our cows are having their calves in late August and September. Fall calving makes life easier on the babies and us--we don't have to deal with the harsh realities of winter or the mosquitoes of spring and early summer.

We had a lovely, lush summer with copious amounts of green grass for grazing and early snows on the mountains. That combination gave us a white blanket of fresh snow on the mountains and lots of big color and contrast in our fall fields. The shadows are deepened this time of year and those great elements of light catch the eye and remind us of the bounty of the land. -- Kathy Deggendorfer 2008. "Lean Toward The Sun," By Sue Smith
    36" x 24", oil on board

Were it not for the bounty of accumulated centuries, filled with artistic creation, my work would have no direction in the present, no intention for the future.

Where do the ideas germinate? Deep in the imagination, that part of human consciousness which seeks to express a new knowledge, a new understanding. Think of the fragile seed, lost deep in the soil before it emerges as an evolving life force – this is the bounty of creation. When I begin a painting, I am like that seed. My ideas are fragile. But with each stroke of paint I reach toward the sunlight, striving for the successful unfolding of possibility. My art is always a journey into unknown lands, places that have never existed outside of my internal world. But do they only exist there? When you see the painted forms, do they then become a part of your internal world, and in some small way open the door to shared human consciousness? Perhaps this is the hidden bounty in artistic expression. Art is never alone in its communication.-- Sue Smith 2008

About Sue Smith:  Sue Favinger Smith is an accomplished Oregon painter who began her professional career at the age of 50. In the decade since, she has won awards and critical acclaim, participated in national and regional juried shows, solo and three person exhibitions, and is a juried member of Oil Painters of America and the prestigious National Association of Women Artists, based in New York.

Working in oil, Sue pushes the boundaries of space and form. "My work is about the worlds we inhabit - our immediate spaces, outward to the vastness of the universe, then inward, to the internal world of imagination. My process is a dance with chaos. Imagine fluids in motion: worlds emerge, then disappear as other forms take their place. These are The Elements. Wild and nearly uncontrolled. They aren't about perfection, or an illusion of safety: they're the energies in our environment, and I'm fascinated by the exploration. I ask myself: Where will they take me now? And how far can I go before the paint dries?"

Sue's work is in private collections throughout the Pacific Northwest, and as far away as Montana and Georgia. Working on either paper, panel, or canvas, she creates one-of-a-kind originals that -- due to the uniqueness of her process -- can never be repeated.

La Guadalupe with the Three Sisters - Corn, Squash and Beans
    CA-LaGuadalupe3Sisters-CornSquashBeans-96-650Artist: Cristina Acosta
Size: 42" wide x 60" tall. Medium: Oil; 22kt gold, sterling silver and copper metal leaf; wax; antique ceramic mosaic tile with 24k gold glazes; on vintage wood planks of Ponderosa Pine reclaimed from a 1904 wood mill and formed by an artisan wood worker into a single panel 42”x 60”

Inspiration for La Guadalupe with the Three Sisters - Corn, Squash and Beans: This image of Guadalupe represents the combination of the Hispanic and Native cultures. She is surrounded with a pattern of roses drawn into tinted wax medium then covered in thin sheets of copper metal leaf. Instead of an Angel, she is supported upon a sterling silver crescent moon and guided by an eagle. Her mantle is embedded with cut crystals laid in the shapes of constellations as they are over New Mexico during part of the year. Her red gown is overlaid with three plants; corn, squash and beans. These plants are referred to as “the three sisters”. The bounty of this harvest enabled Southwest villages and towns to thrive.

La Malinche is also referred to as “the mother of the Mexican race”. The daughter of an Aztec noble family, she was sold into slavery by her mother. Eventually, she was given to Hernan Cortez, the Spaniard who conquered the Aztec in the sixteenth century. Malinche gave birth to the first official mestizo child. The child of the Aztec nation became the mother of the Mexican nation. As the Guadalupe her straight-forward gaze and open arms convey strength and beauty. She is the symbol of transformation and strength imbued with courage and love. -- Cristina Acosta.

About Cristina Acosta: Cristina's career has included: A two-year stint as a billboard mural and lettering artist. Five years teaching college art classes. Nine years as an artisan tile designer & production artist for her nationally distributed signature line of ceramic tile during the 1990’s, life long love of the arts and more.

Her artistry is featured in a variety of books and magazines, including her successful art book, Paint Happy! (North Light Books, ©2002,2004). She illustrated the children’s book, When Woman Became the Sea (Beyond Words Pub., ©1998) and contributed to many other books and periodicals including Artist Magazine, Pure Inspiration, Better Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful, Latina magazine, Latina Style, Good Housekeeping, and Woman’s Day home design publications.

Cristina continually paints and writes from her studio at her home in the rain-shadow of the Cascade Mountains. She creates three distinct series of paintings: Paint Happy series, Hispanic Heritage series (Madonnas) and her oils including her Animal Spirit series. Despite the different styles, her work is typified by her lush use of color, dynamic design and the presence of joy.

Museums, galleries and collectors nationwide collect and exhibit her work.

Cristina's work is represented by and available for sale through High Desert Gallery's Fine Art Gallery in Redmond, Oregon through October 2008.

Artwork and thoughts from Trisha Hassler on the theme "Bounty":

I am so blessed and when I slow down enough to reflect, I realize the abundance my life has offered me. Slowing down and taking time to reflect is so important and always a learning experience. My challenge is to allow myself the indulgence more often. And to express my thanks to those in my life who remain constant and true. It is from them that I draw my strength and reason for being. So, my life is bountiful even though I no longer have a garden! -- Trisha Hassler 2008

    Who Knew! Did you?

RDP-WhoKnew-96-450 Taken from the Redmond Downtown Partnership press release --  "Who Knew!" If you haven't been to Redmond lately, it's likely you'll be saying it too.

The new tagline epitomizes the surprise reaction people exhibit when they learn about Redmond Downtown, according to city officials and the Redmond Downtown Partnership (RDP). As part of Friday's Walk the Art Beat celebration, The RDP announced the new Who Knew! branding campaign and, for the first time, publicly revealed the new logo.

With the Highway 97 re-route completed, downtown Redmond's revitalization is in full swing. Traffic has been cleared and new businesses have opened. The City invested more than $90 million to for the reroute and is now planning to widen sidewalks, build city parks, add public art, and erect new buildings.

"The vision for Redmond Downtown is a place of vitality, energy and excitement. There is now more unique shopping, dining, and businesses," said Camden King, president of the Redmond Downtown Partnership, the organization tasked with marketing the downtown district.

RDP bests that if you haven't been to the downtown district recently, you would be pleasantly surprised. New gourmet restaurants have opened, like the standing-room-only hot spot, the Brickhouse Steak and Raw Bar. Urban art galleries like the High Desert Gallery and Desert Dog Gallery add a cultural flare. Unique stores like the eclectic Paulina Springs Books or Piper Lilly provide a place to linger. Family favorites, like Goody's sweet shop, also keep the area distinctively local. Who Knew!

"Redmond's downtown success depends on attracting more local residents, tourists and investors to do business in Redmond," continued King.

The Who Knew! branding campaign begins this year and is expected to last through at least the next two years. It will capitalize on Redmond Downtown as an up-and-coming top destination in Central Oregon. Kick-started by the new logo and tagline, the brand effort will augment the City, Chamber and other key local entities in attracting more tourists and business to Redmond. The plan includes more community events, opportunities for businesses to co-op group advertising, regional public relations, and marketing that highlights specific district businesses.

To ensure an image that is reflective of Redmond as a whole, RDP hired Every Idea, LLC, to conduct internal research, focus groups and create the new brand image. "Developing this brand to honor Redmond's history and convey its growth was extremely important. Redmond is a diverse community with a distinct blend of the Old West and an emerging, younger, more urban population," said Wendie Every, owner of Every Idea.

Who Knew! won hands down in the research and seemed to absolutely reflect Redmond as a hidden gem. The logo includes four boxes that illustrate components that make Redmond Downtown unique, including its western heritage, its national recognition for Flag USA, and the shopping and dining available. It will be a brand that is versatile and will hold true as Redmond grows.

The consistent image will also help steer economic development in a direction that suits what Redmond residents' desire, including more independent businesses that are representative of Redmond's personality.

Grace Bishko -- Ancient trilogy of Man, Wolf, and Raven continues. Opening Friday, September 12 in Redmond Oregon

GB-GreenMountainEncounter-96-650 Several years ago I began a series of paintings based on the ancient trilogy of Man, Wolf, and Raven. The paintings are about the displacement of wildlife, which I demonstrate by placing the members of this trilogy in trees, rooms, and odd places. The image of Man is always portrayed in a red body and blue coyote mask. My reason for this is that human beings can easily change their image, and their concepts, because we have a brain that allows this, unlike animal life.

Green Mountain Encounter has an environment that is squeezed into patterns that make this little world unnatural-indicating their loss of habitat. The topsy-turvey border keeps us feeling a bit out of control. However, the animals are as they will always be. They cannot transform themselves. They are consistently wolf, black bird and raven. For this reason, I omitted human beings in this painting, and declared their presence in the area below the green mountain. The small blackbird riding the wolf has no fear - it can fly away easily. The raven is often a partner in the wolf’s hunting activities - the raven flushes out the pray and the wolf does the rest, as well as saving some of the carrion for the raven. So, their encounter, in my mind, is natural and might even turn into something playful.

Below the green mountain is a black area with white drawings. This little drama portrays the encroaching threat of the wild animals losing their habitat.
