Riding
horses on the beach in the full moon light is one of the best things
to do on earth. My grandfather lived in Yachats on the Oregon Coast.
When I painted this painting, I was remembering as a little girl -
the many times we drove by the long stretches of beach and of low
tide in the bay on the way to and from visiting him. I longed to be
racing my horse on those clear tracks of sand instead of being in the
car. I always imagined how riding to the coast, instead of driving
there from Albany would have been much more satisfying. I would study
the landscape and think of where we would be trotting, where we would
have to jump downed trees, cross streams - there was always a way for
me and my horse. During this painting I enjoyed invoking the feelings
of that highly alert calm intensity when it feels like you can get
twice as much air in your lungs and you can see twice as well. This
happens when one is free to gallop in the wide open with no one
around but you, your horse, the ocean and the moon. In this painting
you see the suggestion of Newport Bay, the moon in the horse's eye,
who happens to be a bay (color of a horse, brown coat with black
mane, tail and legs). I imagine myself leaning over from his back to
look in his eye and pet his neck to thank him for the exhilarating
ride. -- Kimry Jelen, January 2009 -- "Moonlit
Bay" 36x36 inches Acrylic on Canvas
About
Kimry Jelen: In a moment of clarity, Kimry Jelen left the
corporate world and her life as a fashion designer to honor the
horsewoman she is and pursue her artistic talents. The accolades she
received from companies like Nike, Royal Robbins and O'Neill pale in
comparison to the joy she receives from interpreting her love of
nature with paint, brush and palette knife.
Her
contemporary style flows freely, from abstract to representational,
and demonstrates an intimate understanding of her subjects. A native
Oregonian, Kimry has made the central part of the state her home,
where she is a professional horse trainer and artist.
She
comments on her inspiration, "My art is an opportunity to share
what nature shares with me, every creation is a celebration of life,
whether an aspen grove, the power of horses, or a critter's sense of
humor!"
Kimry's art is also influenced by
her travels to other continents. She has trained in the classical
arenas in Portugal and Spain, walked with the primates in Africa,
toured through Europe, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and rode the
Shinkansen in Japan. Her work has found its way into exhibitions and
corporate and private collections around the globe.
Kimry
Jelen is represented exclusively in Central Oregon by High Desert
Gallery & Custom Framing.
