July in Sisters, Oregon features the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show™, and High Desert Gallery (Sisters Gallery) is honored to be hosting an artist reception Thursday, July 9, from 3:30 to 6:30 pm for Internationally known quilt artist Lura Schwarz Smith. Highly acclaimed, Smith has shown her art quilts in regional, national and international quilt shows. Among her many honors was to have one of her quilts included in the “100 Best American Quilts of the 20^th Century.”

Lura Schwarz Smith states, “As an artist, I am interested in merging my art background with quilting techniques and to explore those potentials, in the effort to express the inner life through fabric art.”

Wish Upon A Card Silent Auction and Fundraiser for Wendy's Wish.

The 2009 Wish Upon A Card fundraiser will be a juried silent auction. High Desert Art Gallery in Sisters Oregon will donate custom framing for approximately fifty postcards. The silent auction will begin July 5, during the Around the Block Fiber Arts Stroll and will continue through Quilt Show Day. The cards will be on display at Sisters Art Works July 1 through July 11. A group of cards from our Quilters Affair Instructors will be framed and silent auctioned at the high school during the week of classes, July 6 – 10.

My Own Two Hands Art Stroll Friday, April 17th - “Something Wild” - Sisters Oregon

Quick - what do cell phones, penicillin, pacemakers, bridges and American Nobel laureates have in common? They were all made possible because of the Arts.

Wild, you say?

According to Psychology Today, the arts in our educational curriculum are vital to continued science and technology advancement. “The fact is that the arts foster innovation...Bottom line: successful scientists and inventors are artistic people.”

Additionally, studies show almost all Nobel laureates in the sciences actively engage in the arts...and here's your opportunity to support those budding Einsteins in our Sisters Schools by visiting High Desert Gallery during the Art Stroll, Friday Night, April 17th, from 4:30 to 7pm.

My Own Two Hands is a city-wide celebration in support for the visual and performing arts in the Sisters School District, through the Sisters Folk Festival and the Americana Project. This year's theme is “Something Wild”, and High Desert Gallery in Sisters is excited to be exhibiting new work by Paul Alan Bennett, Kathy Deggendorfer, J Chester (Skip) Armstrong, John Simpkins, Kimry Jelen and Cristina Acosta specifically during the Art Stroll.

Here's a preview: Cristina Acosta – Bend artist and author – has “Something Wild Outside My Window,” an original pastel overflowing with color, symbolism and exuberance for life. Paul Alan Bennett offers us 'Wild Thing,” an original Gouache on Paper, and “Into the Unknown,” a large original painting sure to inspire. Kathy Deggendorfer has teamed with Tonye Belinda Phillips again this year -- Kathy and Tonye's collaborations are a big hit with art collectors. We're pleased to exhibit their donation which is inspired by the dog walkers from Central Bark. The artwork fits with their new series, to be premiered in July, "Going to the Dogs."

Here's the tease: Kimry Jelen and J. Chester (Skip) Armstrong will reveal their pieces at High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing Friday Night at the Art Stroll. You'll have to come in between 4:30 and 7pm to see what these talented artists have produced. All work is available for auction to benefit the Americana Project.

Walk The Art Beat -- Friday April 24, 2009 at High Desert Gallery

High Desert Gallery is pleased to host a special student exhibition during the upcoming Walk The Art Beat in downtown Redmond Oregon. High school students from Redmond High School and the International School of the Cascades will have ceramic works on display at High Desert Gallery on Friday April 24, 2009 from 5-8pm. Works were selected from top art students in a variety of classes from Redmond main campuses’ Ceramics 2 students and Hartman campuses’ World Pottery & Sculpture and ISC Art classes. A range of students from grades 9-12 are represented. Pieces shown in the collection include hand built and wheel thrown works.

High Desert Art Gallery Bend Oregon: Brick n' Mortar at the Oxford Hotel

It's time for a High Desert Gallery Construction Update!

The Oxford Hotel, a seven story full service boutique hotel in Downtown Bend Oregon is taking shape and will have approximately 56 large suites, many with balconies that overlook downtown. High Desert Gallery will occupy nearly 2000 square feet on the retail ground floor and be one of two retail establishments. Convenient parking for the gallery and hotel will be provided on street and in the city parking structure adjacent to the hotel.

The new Oxford Hotel, a Baney Corporation property, is being built at 10 NW Minnesota Street on the corner of Lava near Bond Street. Across the street is Staccato at the Firehall and one of my favorite coffee shops, Thump Coffee. Thump hosts monthly artist exhibitions and participates in First Friday Art Walk. Stop in next time you are in the area, grab a coffee and scone and watch the High Desert Gallery at the Oxford Hotel take shape.

Although the construction schedule isn't finalized and due to the complexity of the project we can't provide an exact open date but we do plan on being open in the Summer of 2009. Patricia Martin-Freeman: Herd Dynamics

“Standing Cattle” 22” x 7.5” Pen and Watercolor on Paper

I have spent years of my life watching cattle. As a rancher, one of my jobs was to watch and monitor cattle for health. I have a talent for identifying cattle that are coming down with illness. As a competitor at cow cutting competitions, studying the cattle for indications of their behavior and to remember each one of the herd as an individual, is a way to increase one's chances of doing well in the competition.

This little painting is an example of what I love about drawing cattle; even though they are all basically the same creature, they each have unique and identifying faces, lines, markings, and personalities. I love drawing cattle. They are a simple shape that is never the same from moment to moment. I love how cattle stand in groups. There is always a rhythm and pattern to the way the individuals make up the herd, and the way the light falls and scatters through, down and around their blocky forms. -- Patricia Freeman-Martin, March 2009

About Patricia Freeman-Martin: Patricia was raised in a ranching and rodeo family in Eastern Oregon, graduating from high school in Pendleton, Oregon. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts, magna cum laude, from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. She moved to New York City and spent nearly five years in the East Village. During a visit home, she fell in love with a potato farmer from Southern Idaho and never returned to New York. For 16 years, Patricia and her family lived and worked on their ranch at the foot of the Elkhorn Mountains in North Powder, Oregon. Ranching and cutting horses have been an integral part of her life as well as inspiration for her art. In 2004 Patricia and her family purchased a horse ranch in Terrebonne, Oregon, near Smith Rock. Patricia has woven together a beautiful and complex life of many different themes; cattle ranching, cutting horses, family, and art. She uses a variety of mixed media to talk about her experiences in the western landscape and her style reflects her fresh, honest and whimsical way of viewing the world.

This painting is all about color, pattern, and displaced and unexpected placement of some of the images. When I come across something “out of place”, I see it more completely. However, it’s easy to walk right by objects, people, animals, etc. that are where they’ve always been, without seeing them.

About Grace Bishko: Grace lives in Central Oregon, hikes the trails, and paints her memories of what she has seen. A serious and honest painter, she paints from her heart and of her memories and experiences. Her imagery contains an ever so slight surreal edge to grab and retain the viewer's attention, while at the same time satisfying their deep emotions and enjoyment. High Desert Gallery is truly honored to represent Grace Bishko.

In the 1970's she decided to stop painting directly from "life," and to develop a vocabulary that would allow her to paint through her personal feelings. Through education, and experimentation, her creative endeavors evolved in many stages. The results of this adventure are embedded in the artwork she is involved in today. Now, Grace is honored that her paintings are appreciated and understood across a wide multicultural expanse.

Winning all possible awards at the Cleveland Institute of Art, she went on to receive her Master of Fine Arts degree from Rutgers, The State University, Mason Gross School of the Arts. After receiving her M.F.A. degree, Grace taught life drawing at Rutgers, design at University of the Arts, and lithography at Moore College of Art. Since then, she has focused on her own art, exhibiting yearly in solo and group exhibitions.
