The Art of Collecting Art: A Half-Hour Special on OREGON ART BEAT May 14 at 8pm

You don't have to invest a fortune to start an art collection of your own, and OREGON ART BEAT wants to share that knowledge. In this half-hour special, Producer KC Cowan (an avid art collector herself) explores why Portland, and Oregon, is such a great place for art -- particularly affordable art -- and investigates what motivates people to collect.

Cowan looks at art from various angles. She follows a commission from its beginning concept with the artist to delivery to the collectors. She interviews gallery owners and collectors who reveal tips on great places to find good, original art at very affordable prices. And she drops in on the Cascade Arts Auction where bidders can purchase great art and benefit a good cause at the same time.

There's also look at how people can divest themselves of some of their collection as they get on in years or need to downsize. It's another opportunity for collectors to find excellent art.

Tune in to OPB on May 14 at 8pm (and Sunday, May 17 at 2am and 6pm) to get some pointers on how to get started on your own collection.

Cary Lathan Weigand featured at High Desert Gallery, Sisters, Oregon in May, 2009

May is shaping up to be a spectacular month at High Desert Gallery in Sisters, Oregon, with a new exhibit of ceramic sculpture from acclaimed Oregon artist Cary Lathan Weigand. Each exquisite piece takes the viewer into the realm of beauty, mystery, an imagination. Once you see these sculptures they are difficult to forget – as evidenced by the near sell-out of her previous show.

Cary explains, “I look upon each piece as that something which beckons the impenetrable shadows...” The artist works with earthenware, slowly working each figure upward from the base, often allowing the developing form to determine her direction. Each figure is painted with various wood ashes or glazes and fired, then enhanced further by stains, paints and sometimes wax. The artist adds. “Each piece builds a bridge connecting my psyche with the physical realm.”

About Cary L Weigand: Born and raised sixth generation in Hawaii, Cary graduated from the University of Hawaii with a Masters of Fine Art in Ceramics and relocated to Central Oregon in 2004. Her major interest in figure modeling expands both the use of ceramic techniques as well as explores some relatively neglected areas in content. Her figures evoke a sense of mass in contrast to the loose and flowing slab work of drapery and body  appendages. This formal device provides an important ground for the content of her work, aimed at a search for a contemporary spirituality. Working with porcelain, a figurine is worked upward slowly allowing each layer to dry. Then, it is painted with oxides and glazed before firing. For nationally known artist, Cary Weigand, ceramics is a very humanistic and tactile experience. Drawn to Asian philosophies and Shamanism she finds they both focus on awareness of mind, spirit, and environment. The figure represents a vehicle of humanity. Cary's work is an expression of the subconscious and symbolism. She states: "In this way, I seek to look deeper within myself. I look upon each piece as that something which beckons the impenetrable shadows of madness, or the liquid flow of existence, day after day after day, (Or maybe this heart...) a wild beast caged within its chest, dreaming a dream which we've already seen unfolding before us, (time and time again.) About Kathy Deggendorfer: Kathy Deggendorfer lives on a cattle and hay ranch just outside of Sisters, Oregon. Inspired by the color, pattern and texture of her surroundings, she creates vibrant and colorful watercolor paintings. Whimsical images of flowers and ranch life fill the paintings with color and life. "Folks tell me they just feel happy when they look at my work-- that makes me happy." Raised in Portland, Oregon, in a clothing manufacturing family, she says ,"Sewing skills skipped a generation with me... but I love fabric. I like to call my creations 'Painters Quilts.' I can prowl around the rounders full of prints at the Stitchin' Post with the best of 'em... I just put my fabrics in with a paintbrush." Kathy's collaborative work with master quilter, Tonye Belinda Phillips, is another fun combination of painted image and textile interpretation.

Kathy is currently working on a project about Oregon Specialty Farming and sustainable farm practices. This project takes her out into the fields of Oregon farms to paint and learn about what makes Oregon agricultural practices and people unique. Trips to the cattle ranches of Eastern Oregon and vineyards of the Willamette Valley provide her with plenty of rich and colorful images. Kathy's work is collected throughout the Pacific Northwest and reaches out to all corners of the United States. Kathy was selected to create the official Oregon 2008 ornament for the White House Christmas Tree.

Represented by High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon, she has pieces in the permanent collection at Redmond Airport, 2007 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Poster Artist, she wrote and illustrated a children's book for St. Charles Medical Center, and her work has been translated into clothing and fabric for Columbia Sportswear. In 2005, Kathy was awarded 'Citizen of the Year' in Sisters Oregon for her contributions to the community and the arts. About Lura Schwarz Smith: Lura Schwarz Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from San Francisco State University and has been producing textile art for over 30 years. Before that, she was making very bad traditional bed quilts with her first quilting partner, her mother, starting in the 1960s.  "We didn't know enough to realize how bad these were," the artist says, " we had a wonderful time trying everything." 

As Lura Schwarz Smith's skills developed, she began showing in galleries, learning from other quilters, and experimenting with her own techniques. For the past several decades she has been showing quilts and receiving awards at regional, national, and international quilt shows, culminating with prestigious announcement that one of her quilts had been included by the International Quilt Association in the "100 Best American Quilts of the 20th Century."

Lura's other achievements include having her wall hanging, “Shadowplay,” accepted into Quilt Visions 2008 at the Oceanside Museum of Art, California, and participating in the "30 Distinguished Quilt Artists of the World" exhibit at the first Tokyo Dome quilt show in 2002. The artist states that she enjoys merging her art background with quilting techniques.  Her inspirations evolve from "inner, or dream images," which she explores in an "effort to express the inner life through fabric art."

Introducing: Oregon Glass Artist, Jenelle Lynn Kathan

High Desert Gallery is honored to work with and provide Central Oregon representation to Oregon Glass Artist, Jenelle Lynn Kathan. A fused glass artist specializing in functional and decorative custom designs that enhance any home or office. Jenelle's glass work features bowls, platters, plates, framed art, coasters, dichroic jewelry and unique glass gifts including magnets, ornaments, suncatchers and windchimes.

As a self-taught artist, Jenelle Lynn Kathan, dabbling in woodworking and pottery, and found warm glass to be the most exciting and mysterious medium. Presently, her expertise and style border on discovery and humility. By understanding the technical complexities of glass, she is forming a natural curiosity of how glass reacts under varied stages of heat. Jenelle states, “For me it’s all about the process rather than the finished piece, a combination of texture and light that create depth and mystery. My art simply takes form through the process of opening my heart and allowing for the human experience.”

Five Star Days Ahead -- Thoughts from the owner of Sisters Movie House

A couple years ago I participated in a “branding” effort for the greater Sisters Oregon area. The branding team was made up of several marketing guru's, community members, business owners, chamber board members, and interested folks. It truly was a wonderful opportunity to rethink about what makes Sisters Oregon, Sisters Oregon. As some of you may know, the branding effort resulted in marketing plan, The Sisters Country Logo – a S Brand inside a larger O for The Center of Oregon and the tag line of “Pioneering Spirit.”   The brand was developed to capture the area as a community embracing and living the pioneering spirit and committed to honoring its modern western heritage by celebrating its majestic natural surroundings, small town atmosphere and many expressions of art and culture.

The Sisters Country is also comprised of highly spirited entrepreneurs – Small business owners, community members and volunteers with the get up and go, a can do attitude that in part makes what Sisters is today.

Lisa Clausen, owner and founder of The Sister Movie House is one of those highly spirited members of the community – Making things happen while sticking her neck out, taking risks, giving to the community and at the same time building and running a business. I like Lisa, her spirit and her marketing acumen. We don't always agree (especially on movies) but I truly respect her knowledge, expertise and fairness.

I also happen to really enjoy her sometimes monthly newsletter. With Lisa's permission I've copied her most recent newsletter (scroll down). What does this have to do with the Sisters? Not much other than it's all about her spirit, dedication and love of the industry, the spirit of The Sisters Country and most importantly -- making things happen.

More Than Just Movies

Dear Ones,

Not sure why I read my horoscope everyday in the newspaper and I do. And today it said that Virgos would have a 5-star day. Count’em *****. So for every other Virgo out there I hope that today truly is a 5-star day because when we finally got an answer that yes, we would get The Soloist on April 24th I damn near wet my pants. It has been a series of no stars or one star days for most of the month of April, regardless of what the Bend Bulletin says in its daily horoscopes. We have been in a bit of an epic battle with Universal Studios on getting film. They have flat out told us that we will not be able to open Duplicity & State of Play unless we play everything that they produce. That is just goofy and silly and not in their best interests nor in our customers best interests. Also the big chains like Regal are truly flexing their considerable size and demanding and getting extra prints of film that would go to independents like Hannah Montana. And we are so delighted that a small studio who is distributing Sunshine Cleaning recognizes our unique voice in the region. Need to remember to be grateful even when mad as a hornets nest. We are previewing Sunshine Cleaning tomorrow and cannot wait. It has a stellar cast including Alan Arkin who was so incredible in Little Miss Sunshine. Also bringing in 17 Again which is a Back to the Future sort of film with Zac Efron and we should get State of Play on May1st. Hoping for Hannah Montana on April 24th as well and will know next week for sure. We are truly grateful for your patience.

Speaking of gratitude, Judy Dilleward and her tribe of wild women from the Episcopal Church were in last night to see Duplicity. We have a rule of what happens during their time here stays here and the laughter and the joy that they bring to the entire place is truly inspirational. You just cannot be cranky – they all have so much fun and the smiles become infectious. So Judy et al, thanks for lifting up a no star day to a brilliant day.

Last and definitely not least, we are hosting an International Documentary Challenge on Thursday April 30th. This is an astounding event with some local, Oregon and international films. The premise is that you are given a word/theme at a specific time and your team has 48 hours to put together a 5-7 minute film. Several Sisters area residents are participating like Joe Leonardi, Dennis McGregor, John Simpkins, Brent McGregor, Bridget McGinn, Kara Jensen and many more. We are also going to premier Anastacia Scott’s new music video right before the presentation of the films. It is a big night to celebrate the talent in this community. Get your tickets early because this is going to sell out.

Speaking of talent, Travis Ehrenstrom and his band are going to be playing for My Own Two Hands. Travis is a past student of the Americana program and a gifted musician so check him out.

Cindy Benson was in the Original Broadway productions of Les Miserables, Cats, Eating Raoul, All that He Was and Nunsense. She is also a recipient of the Manhattan Association Cabaret Award for Excellence in Musical Comedy. Many Central Oregon residents saw Cindy perform during "Songs For a New Theatre", ITW's inaugural Gala at the Tower last May.
