Jean says, “My life has been in “Inspired Journey” when it comes to quilting. As a nine year  old I discovered sewing and embroidery and this began my love affair with the creativity involved in sewing, quilting, and knitting. I have been fortunate to have turned these interests into a career of teaching and lecturing, writing books, and owning a retail store. The journey is never ending for me.

Recurring themes in my quilts have to do with natural configurations – rocks, trees, flowers, and the landscape. These are a common thread running through my mind as I work intuitively designing quilts, letting the design take on a shape and color all its own. My fascination is with line, pattern, color, and texture and how to design with these elements in mind.”

Ralph Waldo Emerson wrote “Nature always wears the colors of the spirit,” and the colors and spirit of nature are the foundation in the quilts of Jean Wells Keenan. As the 2010 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Poster Artist, show founder, author, shop owner and quilting inspiration to thousands, Jean Wells has always been inspired by the colors, textures and patterns found in nature.

High Desert Gallery, is honored to host an artist reception for Jean Wells at our Sisters location, 281 W Cascade at Oak, on Thursday, July 8, from 3:00pm to 6:30pm, as well as Jean's first art gallery exhibition, "Inspired Journey", from July 2 through July 18, and an Around the Block Fiber Stroll artist reception on Saturday, July 3, from 2 to 6pm. With so many great events planned, we wanted to share some of the "behind-the-scenes" information about Jean.  We recently asked her to tell us how she translates the natural world using fabric and quilting technique. Here is some of what she had to say.

HDG: When designing your quilts, where do you find that unexpected moment of inspiration?

Jean Wells: Inspiration can come in places that you least expect it. I think your mind has to be open to “seeing” things around you. On a hectic day filled with chores and work, the last thing I'm tuned into is inspiration. For me inspiration comes when I'm driving to Bend---a wetland filled with cattails in December, all in neutral tones with a few green leaves still surviving. It makes me think about using that color palette in a quilt - the rich neutrals with just a touch of yellow green. The key would be to use a small amount of the right yellow green to make the neutral palette sing in elegance.

Or driving over the pass to Salem on a stormy day with the grey sky overhead, looking out into the burned area and seeing the black silhouettes of the trees and thinking about “line”. How could I design a quilt using the amazing line work that I am seeing.....it would need to be a vertical quilt to capture the granduer of the strong lines. And now I am seeing the shapes of the land behind the trees. Think about layers, I say to myself. What will become of these ideas. I tuck these thoughts and images into my journal when I get home. Part of the process for me is collecting and processing ideas and having time to think about possibilities. It is never ending.

For instance, a quick trip to Whole Foods for produce and I am awestruck. I love how they organize the vegetables, stacking fluffy lettuce next to leeks, and then there are the beets. Not only is it a feast for the tummy but also the senses. Texture, color, shape, and scale----seeing how all of these work together in the scheme of things is inspiring. Green, being my favorite color since I can remember, I always feel refreshed. Green is like a neutral to me. I often tell my students that some form of green can save the day in a quilt. I like all greens from the yellow greens to sage, emerald, and pine.

HDG: Do you have a favorite quilting technique?

Jean Wells: I love to piece little pieces together creating a larger shape that can stand alone or be part of a composition, but the sewing of two pieces of fabric together is energizing to me. My favorite way to work is to pick a palette and throw in something unexpected that jars the other fabrics slightly. Cut strips off of the fabrics and just start sewing things together. Once I have some units done then go to the design wall and start composing.

HDG: So many of your quilts relate to the natural world - was this always the foundation of your work?

Jean Wells: Nature has always been the foundation of my work. As a child I was a little nature girl. I loved learning the names of trees and wildflowers when we would go camping. And I have always loved to hike and see different parts of the country. I have become an avid gardener and enjoy the intimacy of nature when you look close up at detail. Many of my quilting lines and ideas come from the detail that mother nature presents to us.

HDG: Do you remember your first quilt?

Jean Wells: My first quilt was a small wall hanging with a teddy bear on it for the wall in my now 40 year old son’s room. I still have it today.

HDG: What excites you about fabric, color, pattern, and the craftsman-like skills of a master quilter?

Jean Wells: What excites me about quilting----I love pattern, color, texture and the challenge of creating original designs in quilting. I am not one that likes to make 40 blocks alike anymore. I enjoy the decision making during the process and am sad when it ends. I really can’t get enough of the creative process. There is always one more quilt to make or another color palette to try out. I just love to sew!

About Kay Baker: Nearly a decade ago William Herring, in a workshop through "Art in the Mountains", challenged me to look into the "horses of my soul".  This was his way of encouraging us to look within to see what was motivating us; in other words, why are we drawing or painting.  I've been in love with horses since my childhood so this idea intrigued me.  These were soul searching days for me.  I named my inner horses freedom, faithfulness, glory, and joy.  These are emotions I experience when I paint, especially when I paint en plein air.  In addition I have studied with Albert Handell and others to learn the basics, but when I paint or draw I don't consciously think about these. I paint, knowing things intuitively; lost in my painting.  I want to express the emotions that I am feeling in my work and create something that evokes similar emotions for those that see my paintings.

Patricia Freeman-Martin has had ranching in her blood for most of her life, and after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, magna cum laude, from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, she moved to New York, eventually returning to Oregon and the ranching life that she loves. Patty has woven together a beautiful and complex life of many different themes: cattle ranching, cutting horses, family and art. She uses a variety of mixed media and monoprints to talk about her experiences in the western landscape and her style reflects a fresh, honest and whimsical way of viewing the world. Patty's work has been exhibited in both museum and juried shows, and in is private collections throughout the West.

Meet Jean Wells Keenan: 35th Annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Poster Release and Signing Party – Sisters Oregon

Mark your calendars for a special event Saturday, May 29th, 2010, when High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon hosts Jean Wells-Keenan, the 2010 Quilt Show Poster Artist, at the 35th Annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Poster Release and Signing Party. The event will be held at High Desert Gallery, 281 W Cascade Avenue at Oak, in Sisters, Oregon. The poster signing party will run from 3 to 6pm. Meet Jean Wells, enjoy live music, refreshments and more.

The 2010 Quilt Show Theme, “Inspired Journey,” is beautifully represented by Jean Wells-Keenan's quilts that feature natural configurations – the rocks, trees, flowers, and the familiar elements of the Central Oregon landscape. Jean Wells-Keenan, show founder, author, shop owner and quilting inspiration to thousands, will have her first ever gallery showing at High Desert Gallery in Sisters during the 2010 Sisters Quilt Show and have her quilts featured on the annual Quilt Show Poster. This is an event not to be missed.

April Artist Feature – Sue Smith at High Desert Gallery, Sisters, Oregon

“While I love to paint water, the real essence of this painting is the relationship of the light as it first defines the transparent water rushing over the rocks, and then the warmth radiating upward beneath the spiky shrubs along the rocky bank. There is both action and stillness, moisture and aridity. The poetry in these contrasts add to the richness of being alive in this place.”

Across the Valley

“The idea that interests me in this painting is that of unexplored territory, not just following a path but forging your own. I find myself increasingly drawn to the idea of emptiness, of what it was like in this place centuries ago, when there were no highways or towns or fence lines to get in the way between man and the horizon. There is a stillness in this painting, and a moment of anticipation.”

About Sue Favinger Smith: Working mostly in oils, Sue Smith is interested in discovering a sense of place and capturing that unique essence. Her work ranges from abstract to realism, but remains centered on the landscape. Influenced by the ideas of modern master Quang Ho, each painting makes a unique visual statement. “Whether abstract or realism, it is first, the relationship created as light flows across a form or through a space that excites me, and second, discovering what poetic secrets the natural world holds. I want to be surprised by what I'm seeing, and I try to find a single visual statement that communicates the energy of a particular time and place – and that can be either in reality or the imagination. They all tell stories.” Sue Smith began her award-winning career at the age of 50. She received a degree in art from Oregon State University, where she was honored with the Distinguished Student-Department of Art award. Over the years Sue has participated in national and regional exhibitions, solo and three-person shows. She is an associate member of Women Artists of the West and Oil Painters of America, and a peer-juried member in the prestigious National Association of Women Artists, the oldest professional arts organization for women in the country. Her work is in private collections across the country.
