April Artist Feature – Sue Smith at High Desert Gallery, Sisters, Oregon

High Desert Gallery is honored to announce Oregon artist Sue Smith as our April 2010 Artist Feature at our Sisters Oregon Gallery, located at 281 W Cascade Avenue at Oak. The Exhibition and Sale will run from April 1 through April 30, and will feature new landscapes from the artist's Paintings From the Oregon Outback series.

“While I love to paint water, the real essence of this painting is the relationship of the light as it first defines the transparent water rushing over the rocks, and then the warmth radiating upward beneath the spiky shrubs along the rocky bank. There is both action and stillness, moisture and aridity. The poetry in these contrasts add to the richness of being alive in this place.”

Across the Valley

“The idea that interests me in this painting is that of unexplored territory, not just following a path but forging your own. I find myself increasingly drawn to the idea of emptiness, of what it was like in this place centuries ago, when there were no highways or towns or fence lines to get in the way between man and the horizon. There is a stillness in this painting, and a moment of anticipation.”

About Sue Favinger Smith: Working mostly in oils, Sue Smith is interested in discovering a sense of place and capturing that unique essence. Her work ranges from abstract to realism, but remains centered on the landscape. Influenced by the ideas of modern master Quang Ho, each painting makes a unique visual statement. “Whether abstract or realism, it is first, the relationship created as light flows across a form or through a space that excites me, and second, discovering what poetic secrets the natural world holds. I want to be surprised by what I'm seeing, and I try to find a single visual statement that communicates the energy of a particular time and place – and that can be either in reality or the imagination. They all tell stories.” Sue Smith began her award-winning career at the age of 50. She received a degree in art from Oregon State University, where she was honored with the Distinguished Student-Department of Art award. Over the years Sue has participated in national and regional exhibitions, solo and three-person shows. She is an associate member of Women Artists of the West and Oil Painters of America, and a peer-juried member in the prestigious National Association of Women Artists, the oldest professional arts organization for women in the country. Her work is in private collections across the country.

My Own Two Hands Art Stroll and Art Auction is an annual event, and this year it will be held April 9 and 10, in Sisters, Oregon. This very popular fund raising event, sponsored by the Sisters Folk Festival to benefit the Sisters Americana Project, celebrates “how one individual can change their community for the better.” Artists throughout Central Oregon donate items that range from artwork, sculpture, musical instruments and more to support the Arts programs in Sisters Schools.

35th Annual Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Featured Quilter and Artist Feature- Sisters Oregon

High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon is honored to host Jean Wells-Keenan, the 2010 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Poster Artist, as our July 2010 Artist Feature. The "Inspired Journey" exhibition and sale of Jean's original quilts, will be held at High Desert Gallery, 281 W Cascade Avenue at Oak, in Sisters, Oregon, from July 2 through July 18, 2010.

“Each year the Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show invites a local quilter to be “Queen for a Day”. In selecting the Featured Quilter, we look for someone who has dedicated themselves not only to quilting, but also to inspiring others. We display the quilts of our Featured Quilter in a special location on Quilt Show Day and invite our Featured Quilter to preview their work during the Around The Block Fiber Art Stroll.

In 2010, Jean Wells-Keenan, show founder, author, shop owner and quilting inspiration to thousands, will be inducted into the Quilters Hall of Fame in Marion, Indiana. In honor of her work and her influence on the quilting world. We've asked Jean to be our Featured Quilter for our 35th Anniversary. The show theme “Inspired Journey” highlights the evolution of quilting over the last three decades and the progression of Jean's own work.” - The Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Organization

Jean says, “My life has been in “Inspired Journey” when it comes to quilting. As a nine year old I discovered sewing and embroidery and this began my love affair with the creativity involved in sewing, quilting, and knitting. I have been fortunate to have turned these interests into a career of teaching and lecturing, writing books, and owning a retail store. The journey is never ending for me.

Recurring themes in my quilts have to do with natural configurations – rocks, trees, flowers, and the landscape. These are a common thread running through my mind as I work intuitively designing quilts, letting the design take on a shape and color all its own. My fascination is with line, pattern, color, and texture and how to design with these elements in mind.”

The 2010 Quilt Show Theme, “Inspired Journey,” is beautifully represented by Jean Wells-Keenan's quilts that feature the familiar elements of the Central Oregon landscape. Jean Wells-Keenan, show founder, author, shop owner and quilting inspiration to thousands, will have her first ever gallery showing at High Desert Gallery in Sisters during the 2010 Sisters Quilt Show and have her quilts featured on the annual Quilt Show Poster.

About Kathy Deggendorfer: Kathy Deggendorfer lives on a cattle and hay ranch just outside of Sisters, Oregon. Inspired by the color, pattern and texture of her surroundings, she creates vibrant and colorful watercolor paintings. Whimsical images of flowers and ranch life fill the paintings with color and life. "Folks tell me they just feel happy when they look at my work-- that makes me happy." Raised in Portland, Oregon, in a clothing manufacturing family, she says ,"Sewing skills skipped a generation with me... but I love fabric. I like to call my creations 'Painters Quilts.' I can prowl around the rounders full of prints at the Stitchin' Post with the best of 'em... I just put my fabrics in with a paintbrush." Kathy's collaborative work with master quilter, Tonye Belinda Phillips, is another fun combination of painted image and textile interpretation. Kathy is currently working on a project about Oregon Specialty Farming and sustainable farm practices. This project takes her out into the fields of Oregon farms to paint and learn about what makes Oregon agricultural practices and people unique. Trips to the cattle ranches of Eastern Oregon and vineyards of the Willamette Valley provide her with plenty of rich and colorful images. Kathy's work is collected throughout the Pacific Northwest and reaches out to all corners of the United States. Kathy was selected to create the official Oregon 2008 ornament for the White House Christmas Tree. About Kathy Deggendorfer: Kathy Deggendorfer lives on a cattle and hay ranch just outside of Sisters, Oregon. Inspired by the color, pattern and texture of her surroundings, she creates vibrant and colorful watercolor paintings. Whimsical images of flowers and ranch life fill the paintings with color and life. "Folks tell me they just feel happy when they look at my work-- that makes me happy." Raised in Portland, Oregon, in a clothing manufacturing family, she says ,"Sewing skills skipped a generation with me... but I love fabric. I like to call my creations 'Painters Quilts.' I can prowl around the rounders full of prints at the Stitchin' Post with the best of 'em... I just put my fabrics in with a paintbrush." Kathy's collaborative work with master quilter, Tonye Belinda Phillips, is another fun combination of painted image and textile interpretation. Kathy is currently working on a project about Oregon Specialty Farming and sustainable farm practices. This project takes her out into the fields of Oregon farms to paint and learn about what makes Oregon agricultural practices and people unique. Trips to the cattle ranches of Eastern Oregon and vineyards of the Willamette Valley provide her with plenty of rich and colorful images. Kathy's work is collected throughout the Pacific Northwest and reaches out to all corners of the United States. Kathy was selected to create the official Oregon 2008 ornament for the White House Christmas Tree. Taste of Sisters and Celebration Oregon -- Two art gallery events in Sisters and Bend Oregon

Plan on attending two wonderful events at High Desert Gallery. Sisters Oregon -- The Second Annual Taste of Sisters “Quick Draw,” Auction and Gallery Art Stroll, September 18 & 19, 2009. High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing will be teamed with Bronco Billy's for an exciting two nights of fun, fine art and fine food during the Second Annual Taste of Sisters, September 18th and 19th. On Friday, September 18th, from 6:30 to 9pm, High Desert Gallery will host Paul Alan Bennett at Bronco Billy's, 190 E Cascade Avenue, for the “Quick Draw.” On Saturday, the art will be moved to High Desert Gallery, 281 W Cascade, where the work of art will be available for bid throughout the day. The event culminates with the Taste of Sisters Community Art Stroll, from 4:30 to 6:30pm. Bronco Billy's will provide tastes and food samplings at High Desert Gallery. Live music by The Anvil Blasters and refreshments provided. Come enjoy Sisters, Meet Paul Alan Bennett, sample great treats from Bronco Billy's and wet your whistle! The Annual Show, titled “Celebration Oregon!”, is sponsored by the Plein Air Painters of Oregon and features 40 paintings selected by juror, Cindy Briggs. The exhibit will be showcased in High Desert Gallery's new location at the Oxford Hotel, located at 10 NW Minnesota at Lava, in downtown Bend. The opening reception will be held during the First Friday Gallery Walk, October 2, 2009, from 5-9PM. The evening promises to be lively as we exhibit some of the finest plein air painting in the state, along with live music by the Anvil Blasters, plenty of refreshments, and artful conversation.  The exhibition of plein air paintings, executed on location through Oregon, will run from Oct 1 through the 31, 2009.
