About Kay Baker: Nearly a decade ago William Herring, in a workshop through "Art in the Mountains", challenged me to look into the "horses of my soul".  This was his way of encouraging us to look within to see what was motivating us; in other words, why are we drawing or painting.  I've been in love with horses since my childhood so this idea intrigued me.  These were soul searching days for me.  I named my inner horses freedom, faithfulness, glory, and joy.  These are emotions I experience when I paint, especially when I paint en plein air.  In addition I have studied with Albert Handell and others to learn the basics, but when I paint or draw I don't consciously think about these. I paint, knowing things intuitively; lost in my painting.  I want to express the emotions that I am feeling in my work and create something that evokes similar emotions for those that see my paintings.

Patricia Freeman-Martin has had ranching in her blood for most of her life, and after graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts, magna cum laude, from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, she moved to New York, eventually returning to Oregon and the ranching life that she loves. Patty has woven together a beautiful and complex life of many different themes: cattle ranching, cutting horses, family and art. She uses a variety of mixed media and monoprints to talk about her experiences in the western landscape and her style reflects a fresh, honest and whimsical way of viewing the world. Patty's work has been exhibited in both museum and juried shows, and in is private collections throughout the West.

My Own Two Hands Art Stroll and Art Auction is an annual event, and this year it will be held April 9 and 10, in Sisters, Oregon. This very popular fund raising event, sponsored by the Sisters Folk Festival to benefit the Sisters Americana Project, celebrates “how one individual can change their community for the better.” Artists throughout Central Oregon donate items that range from artwork, sculpture, musical instruments and more to support the Arts programs in Sisters Schools.

March – The month that “spring” shows early signs of appearing! The lower hiking trails start to become accessible yet downhill and cross country skiing are still great options. High Desert Gallery Showcases PAPO Show Artist: Kay Baker

High Desert Gallery is honored to host the 2009 Annual Exhibition of the Plein Air Painters  of Oregon. The Annual Show, titled “Celebration Oregon!”, is sponsored by the Plein Air Painters of Oregon and features 40 paintings selected by juror, Cindy Briggs. "A Peaceful Setting" (Oil 9"x12") by Kay Baker will be displayed and for sale as part of the annual show and sale. The exhibit will be showcased in High Desert Gallery's new location at the Oxford Hotel, 10 NW Minnesota Street at Lava, downtown Bend, Oregon.

"It was a cold morning last April when our PAPO group gathered at Tumalo Reservoir.  Even though there were others near me, when I begin painting I am oblivious to my surroundings.  I am concentrating on what I see and how I can best convey my emotional connection with the scene.

About Plein Air Painters of Oregon: Plein Air Painters of Oregon is a fellowship of professional and emerging artists who paint on location to seek the luminous quality of out-of-doors light in their art. The organization meets for frequent paint-outs during the warmer months of the year. For "Celebration Oregon" the juried artwork will be selected by Cindy Briggs. High Desert Gallery Redmond, Oregon Introduces Kay Baker

High Desert Gallery Redmond is pleased to announce the addition of Oregon artist Kay Baker

to the Redmond Gallery roster of fine artists. Working in oil and pastel, Kay Baker specializes in plein air paintings, capturing the essence of our Central Oregon landscape with a poet's eye. Her work includes grand vistas as well as the intimacy of a quiet nook or the passing slant of sunlight on the riverbank.  It's easy to understand why she has participated in so many juried exhibitions within the past few years. "I want to express the emotions that I am feeling in my work and create something that evokes similar emotions for those that see my paintings."

Well-known throughout Central Oregon, Kay Baker has many collectors and admirers of her work and High Desert Gallery is honored to represent her.

About Kay Baker: A childhood fascination with horses launched Kay Baker's art career. Growing up in Sioux City, Iowa, she spent many hours drawing them. Later she was challenged by noted artist, William Herring, to look into the "horses of her soul." This advice is at the heart of Kay's paintings. As both a plein air painter and a studio artist, Kay seeks that close connection with her subject whether it is a floral study or a tranquil rural scene that allows the viewer to feel and celebrate the uniqueness of God's creation. Kay has a Bachelor of Advertising Art from the University of South Dakota and has studied with many well known artists. She has participated in solo and juried group exhibitions, and is a juried member in Women Artists of the West, the Pastel Society of America, Oil Painters of America, and the Oregon Watercolor Society. She is also a member of the Northwest Watercolor Society, Northwest Pastel Society, and Plein Air Painters of Oregon.

High Desert Gallery Announces a Niche of New Artists in the Redmond Gallery

High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is pleased to announce a new slate of unique artists for the Redmond Oregon Art Gallery. 

 "We've worked hard to establish a great mix of artistic approaches that compliment our Central Oregon lifestyle," said Myrna Dow, High Desert Gallery owner.  "It's important to showcase artistic viewpoints that take the ordinary a bit farther, while remaining representational.  The new artists in our Redmond Gallery do this while maintaining continuity with our Sisters and Bend Gallery artists."

We invite you to visit our Redmond Gallery to view over 60 new original paintings, monoprints, collage and fiber art representing our exciting new Gallery Roster of Artists, including Kay Baker, Sue Gomen Honnell, Rosalyn Kliot, Patty Freeman-Martin, Vivian Olsen, and Sue Favinger Smith.  Work includes plein air painting and wildlife art, landscape in both watercolor and oil, as well as contemporary landscape  and still life, mixed media fiber, western art, and collage.  Future plans include the addition of more Redmond Oregon area artists including work of 3-dimensional artists and guest artists from the Sisters and Bend Galleries. 

Current Featured Artist: Sue Favinger Smith, "Perception and Imagination," featuring a new selection of oil paintings inspired by the landscape.  With "Perception and Imagination", I am prying open that window between what I perceive visually and what I can imagine.  The landscape has always been the inspirational foundation, but my work is not about topography - as beautiful as it is.  It's about being "alone" and not "lonely", about venturing into the unknown and what I might find there.
