Wild Thing - My Own Two Hands Artist Thoughts: Paul Alan Bennett

PAB-MothDonation-2-2009 The current recession has, at times, made me feel timid and tenuous about money matters and future possibilities.  The world had become a scary place like the forests of old where monsters once were thought to lurk.  Feeling such timidity affected my productivity.  I had no ideas and was hesitant to even start.  After two months of feeling like this I knew it was time for a change.  I needed to find a place that gave me strength.  Such a place happened when I started reworking an older painting of a boy leaping into the water.  I changed the water to the forest- that leap into the unknown.  The figure is strong and in action, leaping/diving into the branches of the tree.  The dark parts of the painting deal with that unknown element and the red color of the branches could be seen as blood vessels.  The forest/recession in still a monster in the psyche needing to be confronted.   The strength in the painting comes in two forms:  The action of the figure confronting the unknown is one.  Also, the fact that I was doing this painting with the intent of giving it away.  There is strength to be found in giving.  The fears of the current recession cannot affect such an act negatively.   After I finished this painting I found my mind to be full of new painting ideas.  What a transformation from how I had been feeling just a few weeks before.  I had found my place of strength.   Paul Alan Bennett April 2009

About Paul Alan Bennett: Award winning professional artist, educator, and art advocate, Paul Alan Bennett has garnered national attention. Paul's imagery is passionately detailed and manifests a unique perspective and style resulting in colorful, vivid imagery sought after and collected nationally. Honors graduate of Maryland Institute of Art and Master of Arts from The University of La Verne (Athens Greece), Paul has excelled in the field of watercolor and most recently in the release of a select group of Limited Edition Fine Art Giclee Prints and worked closely with Pendleton Woolen Mills to release limited edition tapestry blankets. Paul's work has been reproduced for two Sisters Folk Festival Posters and the 2008 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show poster. His style and perspective originate from memories, life experiences and travels that sparks many of the themes found in this Sisters artist's work. Paul Alan Bennett's artwork is represented by High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon.

Walkin' On The Wild Side - My Own Two Hands Artist Thoughts: Kathy Deggendorfer

KD-MothDonation-1-2009 "Walkin' On The Wild Side". Everybody in Sisters loves their dog.... some folks like them so much they take them to day care-- puppy play dates!  So in celebration--  K and T are doin' the year of the Dog!!  Tonye and I have had such fun working on our collaborative show for this July --Going To The Dogs-- it was a natural to do this piece for My Own Two Hands.... Something Wild!  We were out for one of our "cobweb clearing" walks one day this winter and happened upon one of the folks from Central Bark (our local doggie day care) taking their charges out for their daily "constitutional".    If it had been ME in charge- it would have been "Chaos on a String" or worse.  I love dogs, but they don't seem to have too much respect for me. Not so with this pro dog walker.....  it was clear which end of the leash was in charge. So three cheers for dogs and dog walkers!   It's a "Walk on The Wild Side"  every day at Central Bark.  --- notice how the leash from the painting syncs with the leash on the quilt!    Awwww.  now that's dang cute! Come to the Auction and support art, music and creativity in Sisters....  Kathy Deggendorfer April 2009

About Kathy Deggendorfer: Kathy Deggendorfer lives on a cattle and hay ranch just outside of Sisters, Oregon. Inspired by the color, pattern and texture of her surroundings, she creates vibrant and colorful watercolor paintings. Whimsical images of flowers and ranch life fill the paintings with color and life. "Folks tell me they just feel happy when they look at my work-- that makes me happy."  Raised in Portland, Oregon, in a clothing manufacturing family, she says ,"Sewing skills skipped a generation with me... but I love fabric. I like to call my creations 'Painters Quilts.' I can prowl around the rounders full of prints at the Stitchin' Post with the best of 'em... I just put my fabrics in with a paintbrush." Kathy's collaborative work with master quilter, Tonye Belinda Phillips, is another fun combination of painted image and textile interpretation.  Kathy is currently working on a project about Oregon Specialty Farming and sustainable farm practices. This project takes her out into the fields of Oregon farms to paint and learn about what makes Oregon agricultural practices and people unique. Trips to the cattle ranches of Eastern Oregon and vineyards of the Willamette Valley provide her with plenty of rich and colorful images.  Kathy's work is collected throughout the Pacific Northwest and reaches out to all corners of the United States.  Kathy was selected to create the official Oregon 2008 ornament for the White House Christmas Tree.   Represented by High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon, she has pieces in the permanent collection at Redmond Airport, 2007 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Poster Artist, she wrote and illustrated a children's book for St. Charles Medical Center, and her work has been translated into clothing and fabric for Columbia Sportswear. In 2005, Kathy was awarded 'Citizen of the Year' in Sisters Oregon for her contributions to the community and the arts. High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is honored to represent Kathy Deggendorfer exclusively in Central Oregon.

Soul Catcher - My Own Two Hands Artist Thoughts: Kimry Jelen

KJ-MothDonation-1-2009 Soul Catcher, is a portrait inspired by the romantic era from the mid 1800's with the dark shadowy background and dramatic highlights. While painting, I imagined all the special horses I have met with those big liquid eyes and that wonderful silky coat that swept me off my feet and carried me on their backs. Some horses are able to look deep into your soul - they know everything about you and accept you anyway. It is a humbling experience that touches your heart. Kimry Jelen, April 2009

About Kimry Jelen: Central Oregon is home for professional horse trainer and artist, Kimry Jelen. She demonstrates an intimate understanding of her subjects. Her contemporary style flows freely from abstract to representational. She uses playful perspectives and surprising colors to express passion in her art. "My art is an opportunity to share with others what nature shares with me. Every creation is a celebration of life, whether an aspen grove, the power of horses, or an animal's sense of humor! I receive so much joy from interpreting my love of nature with paint, brush and palette knife."

Kimry's art is also influenced by the places she has lived and traveled. She worked for ranches in the Rocky Mountains of Montana and New Mexico. She's walked with primates on safari in Africa and rode horses in the classical arenas of Portugal and Spain. Inspiration from these places can be seen in her use of space, unique texture and remarkable color combinations. This native Oregonian's work has found its way into private collections across the United States and the continents she's visited.  High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is honored to represent Kimry Jelen exclusively in Central Oregon.

Something Wild Outside My Window - My Own Two Hands Artist Thoughts: Cristina Acosta

CA-MothDonation-1-2009 This painting expresses the contentment, curiosity and happiness I feel watching the birds. The Ponderosa pine, manzanita and bitterbrush garden around my art studio offer shelter and food to the native and migrating birds in Central Oregon. I put several birdfeeders outside my studio windows so that I can watch the birds as I paint. Last summer a lost racing pigeon stayed for a couple of weeks, getting fat and rested before flying off to join a wild flock that roost near the river.

Some birds arrive to the feeders in flocks, others visit singly or in pairs. I imagine their flights over the mountains and through severe storms before they find a haven and a snack in my garden, tucked into the rain shadow of the Cascade Mountains.  Cristina Acosta

About Cristina Acosta: Cristina's career has included: A two-year stint as a billboard mural and lettering artist. Five years teaching college art classes. Nine years as an artisan tile designer & production artist for her nationally distributed signature line of ceramic tile during the 1990’s, life long love of the arts and more.   Her artistry is featured in a variety of books and magazines, including her successful art book, Paint Happy! (North Light Books, ©2002,2004). She illustrated the children’s book, When Woman Became the Sea (Beyond Words Pub., ©1998) and contributed to many other books and periodicals including Artist Magazine, Pure Inspiration, Better Homes and Gardens, House Beautiful, Latina magazine, Latina Style, Good Housekeeping, and Woman’s Day home design publications.  Cristina continually paints and writes from her studio at her home in the rain-shadow of the Cascade Mountains. She creates three distinct series of paintings: Paint Happy series, Hispanic Heritage series (Madonnas) and her oils including her Animal Spirit series. Despite the different styles, her work is typified by her lush use of color, dynamic design and the presence of joy. Museums, galleries and collectors nationwide collect and exhibit her work.   Cristina's work is represented by and available for sale through High Desert Gallery's Fine Art Gallery in Central Oregon.

Speak Your Mind - My Own Two Hands Artist Thoughts:  John Simpkins

    JS-MothDonation-1-2009

“Speak Your Mind” (the painting) is the result of a stop-motion animation project used in a documentary film, "Speak Your Mind" entered in the "Doc Challenge 2009.” The painting includes an original hand-painted wooden liner created by me especially. The panel (artwork) is the final painting in a series of approximately 200 painted images in the animated film, and all the other paintings are underneath this one! So the winning bid/buyer is getting 201 paintings in one! “Speak Your Mind,” includes a copy of the documentary film created for the “Doc Challenge 2009.”

About John Simpkins: Renowned painter, John Simpkins’ work draws upon Americana, folk and medieval art, myth and mysticism, and is avidly collected by dedicated patrons throughout North America. Nationally published artist, gallery owner, and supporter of the arts, John has received national recognition. Born in Napa Valley, California, he studied at UC Davis and privately with Earl Thollander and Gordon Brusstar. His work has been reproduced in limited edition prints and distributed nationally. Since 1976, John has had many one-man and group shows in California and Oregon.  John lives in Central Oregon with his standard poodle companion, Phoebe, atop a rocky plateau five miles south of Sisters. His travels include much of the continental United States, Mexico, Europe, India, Southeast Asia, and most recently Nepal and Tibet. John paints intuitively, encouraging his emotional voice to speak: Simpkins says, "I paint with my heart." He enjoys painting, tending his orchid collection, and designing interiors.

My Own Two Hands Artist Thoughts:  J Chester Armstrong

We all wait with anticipation to see what magic Skip will bring to us this year. The piece was not complete at press time, and will be revealed at the art stroll. Skip's support is greatly appreciated!

    About J Chester Armstrong:
A self taught artist, Skip achieved national and international reputation through gallery representation in major art cities including Carmel, Laguna Beach, Palm Desert, Santa Fe, Taos, Aspen and others. He has been sculpting professionally since 1972 and his work is sought after by private and corporate collectors worldwide.  "My art depicts and expresses the world of nature - primitive, immediate and direct; the screams of eagles soaring on the wind; the stealth of big cats hunting; coyotes howling at the moon rise; the pound of horses on the run; otters playing water tag ... these things move me; this and me are one - brothers of the life force. To find this is my joy, to express it, my passion," states Armstrong.  High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing of Central Oregon is honored to represent J Chester Armstrong in Central Oregon.

Reception Thoughts on "Through The Envelope" - John Simpkins & Paul Alan Bennett

Ttereception72450358 John Simpkins -- So many wonderful people came to the opening of Through The Envelope!  Old friends, new friends, people I had not yet had the pleasure of meeting...all gathering together to celebrate the work that Paul and I had created.  It was a team effort, an evening that focused on the outcome of over six months of love, imagination and work.

The gallery had a warm celebratory feeling that night.......a large vase of flowers graced one of the tables, and there were bountiful hors d'oeuvre and wines for those in attendance.  Soft elegant guitar music filled the gallery, played by the very talented and handsome Jacob French.  Paul and I had created some special "Through The Envelope" envelopes mounted on some of our old paint brushes, and some of us had some fun playing with those, holding them up as masks to look through.  There was so much warmth and frivolity in the gallery that night!

One of the most remarkable moments for me was when I met two collectors from New York who also have a home in Black Butte.  They come from Danish heritage, and they asked if I happened to be Danish also.  I admitted that I was at least 1/4 Danish, that my Great Great Grandfather had been a Danish sea captain.   I was curious as to why they had asked. They told me that they noticed a strong Danish sense of design and symbolism in much of my work.  My ceramics appealed to them and they purchased one of the most important pieces from my new collection.  I was greatly honored.

Andrew Moore, writer for the Bend Bulletin, had written a story on Paul Alan Bennett and me for the "Go!" magazine section of the paper, calling us "Brothers in Art".  I like that title very much!  Paul and I are indeed brothers in art, and our work is complimentary, it shows well together.  What a privilege it has been to work with Paul over the months in order to create this show!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the gallery and the wonderful sales staff for their dedication and support through the years.  To Paul, my deepest gratitude and deepest bows for his good nature and remarkable imagination, friendship and humor.  We spent many a moment doubled over in laughter during the production of this show!   To James Martin, my sincere thanks for all of his remarkable help in gilding my frames and documenting my work.  And to all of my collectors and friends who attended the opening, my warmest thank you! What a supreme pleasure it has been, the journey over the past six months that has culminated in this special show.  For those of you who have not yet visited the gallery and this showing, please take some time to make a visit, I think you come away refreshed and perhaps your imagination will be massaged by the images that Paul and I have created especially for you.

I look forward to our next showing, and a chance to meet each and every one of you!

    John Simpkins - August 15, 2007

Ttereception72262350Paul Alan Bennett -- I thought it was a great success- an "event" for Sisters and the surrounding community.  I enjoyed being a part of it and felt that all involved shared the same feeling.  I met many interesting people from various parts of the country and well as from old friends from various places and times in my life.  I found it curious that so many people asked me what was my favorite painting.  My pat answer of responding, "well, I feel it's like asking a parent who his favorite child is" didn't really carry much weight so I pointed out things I liked about "Drifting Through Time Over Black Butte" and "Nocturne."  Everyone had their own favorites and it was interesting to hear how those varied. Many people liked the boat image (Drifting Through Time Over Black Butte) as well as the Nocturne, but other choices were the sheep,  the Wedding Dancers and Chief Paulina.  I thought that the work seem to speak to everyone in a different way and I enjoyed seeing that.

The show was a very successful group effort on the part of The High Desert Gallery  (framing, publicity, reception) and the work that John and I did. John and I both challenged ourselves with new media which pulled us in new directions.  New ideas come out as a result.  The show's theme, "Through the Envelope" gave many opportunities for innovative advertising and a fun brochure. There was a certain French costume ball party in the flavor of all this.  This was greatly aided by the music of Jacob French and the refreshments.

Since the opening, I've had several people make a point of telling me how much they enjoyed the show.  They even mentioned enjoying the ad!  All this helps to make the opening a community event that all can take pleasure in.

    Paul Alan Bennett - August 15, 2007

For me the show itself is art -- Thoughts on "Through The Envelope" by John Simpkins

Ttejsthechaseweblog082007_2 This show, Through The Envelope, is all about what I enjoy most about life: process.  Paul Bennett, Todd Dow and I began discussing this show early in this year, and the process has lead us to this moment, the opening day of the exhibit.  The title of  the show emerged after many casual gatherings sitting and free-thinking while sipping espressos at local Sisters coffee houses.  The wonderment of the concept was great fun, and watching the show take a shape and a direction is very much the way I paint.

Getting a spark of an idea, sometimes from dreams, or even just the way light plays off of an object, might lead to the beginning of a panel.  The initial strokes of venetian red gesso on a panel sets the foundation for what may come.  This signals an intention of creation.  I tend to watch over my creative muse as best I can, perhaps bending to the gratification of one of Janit Brockway's oatmeal cookies at The Navigator News here in Sisters!  Massaging the creative spirit, and in the case of a show like this, thinking of the effect all the work will have upon the viewer when shown together, is of great importance to me.  I like to include different shapes, complement the use of color and design, and experiment with the subject.  And, yes, I have discovered that cookies and espresso often encourage this activity!

For me the show itself is art.  Perhaps like dining on fine cuisine, I hope that this show provides both visual and spiritual delights.  My wish and desire is that the viewer's eye will revel in the concert of colors and shapes, then upon closer examination, be delighted by the content and detail of each work.

There was a marvelous sense of something akin to "family" as I produced this show.  Over the six months of production there have been highs and lows, challenges to be solved, and the childlike joy of acting on the sparks of creativity that make me smile.  Living with these 20 pieces of  work, saving them for the opening on August 11th, seeing them each day, imagining them hanging together in a show, this act itself is an art for me.   Each piece has it's own spirit and personality,  and to have them shown together is not unlike one of the gatherings of my family and relatives on a holiday!  The process of creating this show has been a delight for me.  I hope you will enjoy the work.

A First In My Career -- John Simpkins

Jsmermaidplatter72350262 On a recent trip to San Francisco I was thrilled by the antique Chinese porcelains I saw.  Many were in the collection of Richard Gervais (www.richardgervaiscollection.com ) and The Asian Art Museum.  I began researching and discovered a city in China called Jingdezhen.  This is the place that many of the blue and white porcelains originated from.  I hope to visit there one day and create some large decorated vessels in porcelain.

For the show, "Through The Envelope" (opening August 11th) I commissioned Bill Earhard (Bend, Oregon) to throw several vessels and large platters in white clay for me.  I painted  these in cobalt based under glazes and did a final satin glaze over that.  I am greatly pleased by the shapes and the imaginative aspects of the collaboration in this media.  I am most excited by a large vessel I have commissioned Brad Henry (Bend Oregon) to throw for me.  It will be almost 5 feet tall!! We will do this piece in a warm colored clay, then do a white slip over that so that I can scratch through the surface to reveal the undercolor.  Then I will decorate the vessel in cobalt blue under glazes and finish with a  soft clear glaze.

There will be 7 of these new pieces in my show, and this is a first in my career, I have never shown ceramic work until this show.  I am very excited about the direction this media has allowed me to take.  Very playful and decorative, the pieces are indeed a special collection of work that hopefully will evolve in the future to contemporary porcelain with a strong honorable nod in the direction of ancient China.  I hope you enjoy the pieces as well as the 10 paintings earmarked for the show!  Please come to the opening on August 11th!  I will see you there!

A sneak preview and some thoughts ...

    Paul Alan Bennett

Ttepabhammocknightsdetail304145 "Through the envelope" can mean so many things- endless things.  It can mean a veil or curtain that hides things but those things can still be sensed or shadows seen.  It could mean the envelope of the present through which the past peeks out now and then- when history comes to light unexpectedly.  It can mean the envelope of skin or fur or feathers or scales that the spirit dances within.  Likewise, the envelope of youth or old age.  We are all on a moving train passing "through the envelope" of time.  Or it can mean a letter, a stamp, stationary, one's handwriting, how we feel when we recognize someone else's handwriting on a letter addressed to us.  Or it can be a bill, a check, a credit card application with our typed name peeking out "through the envelope."  It can be a mood that we are passing through- anger, hurt, sadness, feeling deeply touched, longing, elation, pride, love, grief...

Or it can simply be a poetic sounding phrase that feels good on the tongue.

    John Simpkins

Ttejsinspirationdetailed Paul Alan Bennett and I began pondering the possibilities of our next show in January of this year.  We spent many an hour sitting at The Navigator or Sisters Coffee Company, sipping lattes or tea and encouraging our imaginations to create a title for our show this August.  Eventually, I do not recall precisely how it happened, we decided upon the title, "THROUGH THE ENVELOPE".  I likened it to the ability of seeing into another person's persona.....in this case, taking a peek into the inner workings of our personalities.

THROUGH THE ENVELOPE encouraged my creative muse to visit often.  I began imagining new forms in ceramic to decorate, and even found a most unusual wooden form to paint while trapped by a blizzard in Laramie, Wyoming!  Though thought to be born with two left feet, this coming show has encouraged me to dance freely!  The show in August will be diverse in content and subject with an overall quality of playfulness and wonderment.

I am currently working on 12 pieces for the show.  Some paintings are the result of dreams recalled, some are based upon sketches done in Tibet, others express my sense of rhythm and balance on selected forms, all reflect my response to the dance of life....... there are images of cats and poodles, monks and Buddhas, mermaids and anteaters, and even a couple of self-portraits.........please come and see "through my envelope" and into my heart!

    Warmest regards,
    John Simpkins
