High Desert Gallery is honored to present “Imaginary Landscapes,” a new series of original paintings and fine art giclees by Oregon artist Paul Alan Bennett. Drawn from imagined – and yet familiar – landscapes throughout the High Desert, Paul Alan Bennett works with his iconic style to transport the viewer to magical places.

“The rivers hint of such places as the Columbia River, the Snake and The John Day. The mountains suggest the Cascade Range, The Steens or those found in the high plateau areas of Southern Oregon or Nevada. The brilliance of the stars in the high desert sky are common to all these areas. They are like tiny mirrors sewn into the fabric of the night.

The central theme of all these works is made up of three parts: night sky, mountains and rivers. These act like three chords of music. The placement of boats, birds, trees, rocks, the moon and stars are the accent notes within those chord patterns. The eye is guided around by such accents. This serves to create a silent symphony of wonder and scale, similar to that found in the Romantic images of early American landscape painting.” -- Paul Alan Bennett, June 2009

Going To The Dogs -- A collaborative trip through the neighborhood from a dog’s perspective.

Kathy Deggendorfer, watercolor artist, and Tonye Belinda Phillips, quilter, have been having fun again! It’s never a dull moment when these two creative women put their heads together. Out on a long walk along the Metolius River with their dogs last summer, “to get outside and stretch our legs and our imaginations,” they dreamed up what has turned out to be their latest project! Tonye had been working on a series of whimsical houses that is called “House Party.” These great images are full of color and pattern. Kathy, as part of her project about Oregon specialty farms, had been working on a book. The main character and his (surprise, surprise!) “Howdy Pardner” – Watercolor on Paper, by Kathy Deggendorfer (Image)

When I was a little kid growing up in the 50’s and 60’s in Portland I dreamt of the life of a cowboy. My parents told me my very first words were “Dat Da Dah”... I’d point to horses in the field and shout "Dat Da Dah!" Apparently because in the TV show, The Lone Ranger., every time he rode onto the screen the music would come up -- dat da da dah, dat da da dah, dah daaaaaaaah da! Hence, horse = dat dah dah.

My Dad was from Tucson so every summer vacation ---you got it... SUMMER vacation-- we would leave cool and rainy Portland and drive to Tucson to visit relatives. We’d swelter in the in unaccustomed heat but I loved to go because they’d take me out to a ranch and let me ride a horse! I’d pack my authentic western leather vest with the fringe trim and the metal studded holster and pearl handled six shooters I begged for every year at Christmas. I’d always get new boots and jeans in Tucson... much better selection, don’t ya know. I remember the year they begged the wrangler to tell me that " Cowgirls really do comb their hair". Hmmmm. They never showed any real personal hygiene on those TV shows. Oh, how I wanted to live there in Arizona and have my own horse--even though it was hotter than Hades and the bugs and snakes bit people and the bushes had thorns.

This piece, “ Howdy Pardner” is kind of an homage to all that childhood longing for wide open spaces and the dusty trail.

The border is reminiscent of this really cool Indian Chief Headdress that we had as kids-- it was made of colored feathers sewn into a band of red, yellow and blue felt. With this thing on you could command half the neighborhood kids, lead war parties, smoke imaginary peace pipes and feel very much connected to the history of the West.

The cowboy in the center looks a little bit like Dan Hicks from Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks-- I just replaced his guitar with a coyote... two truly great Western singers.

Of course, I had to put the mountains and the foothills of Sisters as the backdrop. It’s where I always hoped I would end up-- on a ranch near the mountains.

The floral pattern in the background came from an old embroidered cowboy shirt I used to have -- ahhh, it was a beauty!

The corners are dominated by the horseshoe prints left by my trustee mare--Boogie --on a field of red paisley like my favorite red cowboy bandana.

"The Lone Ranger", "My Friend Flicka", "Rin Tin Tin", "Sky King", maybe even a little bit of "Bonanza" (oh, wasn't Little Joe somethin' else???) thrown in.

Those TV Westerns made me pine for the life of a cowboy--- and guess what? Here I am--living on a ranch--horses, cows, with hay in my pockets and wearing cowboy boots every day of the year! -- Kathy Deggendorfer May 2009

About Lura Schwarz Smith: Lura Schwarz Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from San Francisco State University and has been producing textile art for over 30 years. Before that, she was making very bad traditional bed quilts with her first quilting partner, her mother, starting in the 1960s.  "We didn't know enough to realize how bad these were," the artist says, " we had a wonderful time trying everything." 

As Lura Schwarz Smith's skills developed, she began showing in galleries, learning from other quilters, and experimenting with her own techniques. For the past several decades she has been showing quilts and receiving awards at regional, national, and international quilt shows, culminating with prestigious announcement that one of her quilts had been included by the International Quilt Association in the "100 Best American Quilts of the 20th Century."

Lura's other achievements include having her wall hanging, “Shadowplay,” accepted into Quilt Visions 2008 at the Oceanside Museum of Art, California, and participating in the "30 Distinguished Quilt Artists of the World" exhibit at the first Tokyo Dome quilt show in 2002. The artist states that she enjoys merging her art background with quilting techniques.  Her inspirations evolve from "inner, or dream images," which she explores in an "effort to express the inner life through fabric art."

Wish Upon A Card Silent Auction and Fundraiser for Wendy's Wish. The 2009 Wish Upon A Card fundraiser will be a juried silent auction. High Desert Gallery will donate custom framing for approximately fifty postcards. The silent auction will begin July 5, during the Around the Block Fiber Arts Stroll and will continue through Quilt Show Day. The cards will be on display at Sisters Art Works July 1 through July 11. About Kathy Deggendorfer: Kathy Deggendorfer lives on a cattle and hay ranch just outside of Sisters, Oregon. Inspired by the color, pattern and texture of her surroundings, she creates vibrant and colorful watercolor paintings. Whimsical images of flowers and ranch life fill the paintings with color and life. "Folks tell me they just feel happy when they look at my work-- that makes me happy." Raised in Portland, Oregon, in a clothing manufacturing family, she says ,"Sewing skills skipped a generation with me... but I love fabric. I like to call my creations 'Painters Quilts.' I can prowl around the rounders full of prints at the Stitchin' Post with the best of 'em... I just put my fabrics in with a paintbrush." Kathy's collaborative work with master quilter, Tonye Belinda Phillips, is another fun combination of painted image and textile interpretation.

Kathy is currently working on a project about Oregon Specialty Farming and sustainable farm practices. This project takes her out into the fields of Oregon farms to paint and learn about what makes Oregon agricultural practices and people unique. Trips to the cattle ranches of Eastern Oregon and vineyards of the Willamette Valley provide her with plenty of rich and colorful images. Kathy's work is collected throughout the Pacific Northwest and reaches out to all corners of the United States. Kathy was selected to create the official Oregon 2008 ornament for the White House Christmas Tree.

Represented by High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon, she has pieces in the permanent collection at Redmond Airport, 2007 Sisters Outdoor Quilt Show Poster Artist, she wrote and illustrated a children's book for St. Charles Medical Center, and her work has been translated into clothing and fabric for Columbia Sportswear. In 2005, Kathy was awarded 'Citizen of the Year' in Sisters Oregon for her contributions to the community and the arts. Miss Dotty Travels to Suttle lake Lodge! -- Art Exhibition
