Where Seldom Is Heard A Discouraging Word”,   21.5” x 18.0”
Hand dyed and rusted cotton, found objects, beads, nuts and bolts
by Nationally Acclaimed Oregon Mixed Media Artist, Trisha Hassler

Ranches of all shapes and sizes once dotted the western United States.  Some ranches have thrived and become modernized testimonials to the new western way of life.  Still more have vanished or been assimilated into housing developments, highways or new golf resorts.  One such ranch was offered to me as a hunting ground for rusty metal parts and treasured pieces.  The bits of old steel are full of untold stories, songs by the campfire and endless starry nights in the desert of Central Oregon.  i am inspired by the life contained in each one.  These one of a kind found objects impart their individual story to each of the pieces created from them and if you listen very carefully, maybe you will even hear the song from long ago.  -- Trisha Hassler, May 2009

About Trisha Hassler:  Lifetime quilter and award winning Oregon Artist, Trisha has enjoyed numerous group and one woman exhibits throughout the United States and New Zealand.  Her work has been published nationally in books and magazines highlighting contemporary fiber work.  As a current board member of Art In The Pearl Fine Arts & Crafts Festival and former board member of L.O.C.A.L. 14 she is very involved in the local arts community in her home town of Portland.  Trisha embraces both torch-cut steel and improvisational quilt construction and through her artistic abilities combines the two mediums into one art form even though the two parts are considered at opposite ends of the artistic spectrum.  Her work is known for it's intricacy and surface detail and the use of the dissimilar elements has become her trademark.  Trisha Hassler's artwork is available exclusively in Central Oregon at High Desert Gallery of Central Oregon.

About Lura Schwarz Smith: Lura Schwarz Smith holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Art from San Francisco State University and has been producing textile art for over 30 years. Before that, she was making very bad traditional bed quilts with her first quilting partner, her mother, starting in the 1960s.  "We didn't know enough to realize how bad these were," the artist says, " we had a wonderful time trying everything."

As Lura Schwarz Smith's skills developed, she began showing in galleries, learning from other quilters, and experimenting with her own techniques. For the past several decades she has been showing quilts and receiving awards at regional, national, and international quilt shows, culminating with prestigious announcement that one of her quilts had been included by the International Quilt Association in the "100 Best American Quilts of the 20th Century."

Lura's other achievements include having her wall hanging, “Shadowplay,” accepted into Quilt Visions 2008 at the Oceanside Museum of Art, California, and participating in the "30 Distinguished Quilt Artists of the World" exhibit at the first Tokyo Dome quilt show in 2002. The artist states that she enjoys merging her art background with quilting techniques.  Her inspirations evolve from "inner, or dream images," which she explores in an "effort to express the inner life through fabric art."

March And April at High Desert Gallery

Spring may be just around the corner but why wait to see what High Desert Gallery artists have picked just for you?

Our Redmond Gallery is showcasing the work of Paul Alan Bennett through the month of March. Paul's ability to capture the spirit and ambiance of High Desert life is unsurpassed. From the evocative “The Past Floats Over the High Desert” to “Driving Through Dry Canyon at Night” and “Firework Nights”, the depth and maturity in Paul's new work is evident and always impressive. Despite the economic condition, collectors continue to support Paul Alan Bennett and High Desert Gallery is honored to represent him. We all look forward to sharing this exciting body of work with you.

In Sisters, kick up your heels over a new series of monoprints by regionally known Oregon artist Patricia Freeman-Martin. We guarantee you won't look at these cowgirls and their fancy ponies without smiling – which is what we're all about at High Desert Gallery and Custom Framing of Central Oregon. We want you to smile when you come into one of our galleries, and take some of that good cheer home with you, perhaps in the form of an original piece of art. Patricia's life-long love affair with ranch life and our Oregon lifestyle shows in this strong new body of work, filled with the excitement and energy of good art. Patricia's sense of capturing the moment is infectious – we think it will be hard for you not to take one of these delightful “Trick Riders” home.

TH-EternalOptimistDET-96-650 In April, the Redmond Gallery will be hosting Nationally known, award winning Oregon artist Trisha Hassler. As an artist, Trisha is unique in her use of reclaimed torch-cut steel and often hand-dyed, improvisational quilting. Her work has been featured in select group shows and museums throughout the world. But it isn't the uniqueness of her art form that captures and holds our attention as much as it is the subtle beauty and deeper meaning behind the work.

Trisha states, “All the pieces in this continuing series speak quietly of the intricate center of our most private being surrounded by a strong protective armor..and the interplay of the two dissimilar elements is a reminder to embrace the ever shifting balance present in our lives.” Trisha Hassler is represented exclusively in Central Oregon at High Desert Gallery & Custom Framing in Redmond and Sisters, Oregon.

And it's back – the Redmond Walk The Art Beat is starting the new season with the first event scheduled for Friday April 24, from 5 – 8pm. We'll be here with refreshments, good conversation and good friends. Featured Artist is Trisha Hassler, as well as a Redmond High School Guest Ceramic Artist. We'll be looking for you. Join us for great art, refreshments and live music by Doug and Katie Cavanaugh!

April in Sisters is My Own Two Hands, and High Desert Gallery is excited to be exhibiting  new work by Paul Alan Bennett, Kathy Deggendorfer, J Chester Armstrong, and Cristina Acosta specifically for this event. One of the true treasures of Sisters is the strong and supportive community life, and events such as My own Two Hands, under the auspices of the Sisters Folk Festival, is your opportunity to come out and have fun while benefiting the Sisters Americana Project. Don't miss the Art Stroll and Chili Feed on Friday, April 17, 2009. Great art, great music, great people from 4:30 to 7:00.  Join us at High Desert Gallery for great art, refreshments and live music by Doug and Katie Cavanaugh! Then head on over to Bronco Billy's for hot chili and more live music. We'll be posting more about this event in the future in case we haven't sold you on it yet. But we will. Trust us. This is what living in Sisters is all about.

Speaking in Cloth: 6 Quilters, 6 Voices – Work of Trisha Hassler and 5 other fiber artists continues .....

TH-ExplosionOfTheSoulDET-72-600 This national traveling quilt exhibit offers the viewer to visually and intellectually enter the worlds of six Northwest quilt artists. The six artists (Ann Johnston, Jeannette DeNicolis Meyer, Cynthia Corbin, Nancy Erickson, Quinn Corum, Trisha Hassler) invite you to respond to their use of cloth and thread as they tell their stories and record their explorations. Each quilt artist has found their own personal inspiration in a myriad of sources, and each finds their own voice in manipulations of color, fiber and form that express their unique perspective on life, places and art.  Rocky Mountain Quilt Museum

Building on the Frame of My Ancestors” -- Lillian Pitt

LP-Portrait-96-650 “Building on the Frame of My Ancestors,” an exhibit featuring the work of Native American artist Lillian Pitt, will open Thursday, Oct. 2, in The Gallery in the Pinckney Center for the Arts on the Central Oregon Community College  campus. Pitt has been exhibiting her contemporary sculpture, carvings, masks, glass, wearable art, and works on paper for more than 20 years. Tracing her roots to the indigenous people of the Columbia River Gorge, she is called Wak'amu (Strongly Rooted) by elders of the Warm Springs/Wasco and Yakama tribes.

“I use the ancient stories of my ancestors as a basis for the imagery I create. By doing this, I maintain the memory of our 10,000-year history in the Columbia River Gorge and keep the beliefs of my people alive,” she says.

The exhibition will continue through Nov. 7. Regular gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For information, call 383-7514.

Artwork and thoughts from Trisha Hassler on the theme "Bounty":

I am so blessed and when I slow down enough to reflect, I realize the abundance my life has offered me. Slowing down and taking time to reflect is so important and always a learning experience. My challenge is to allow myself the indulgence more often. And to express my thanks to those in my life who remain constant and true. It is from them that I draw my strength and reason for being. So, my life is bountiful even though I no longer have a garden! -- Trisha Hassler 2008
